� '! <br /> RI,GULAR ?ZEETING OF THE ORONO COUNCIL, SEPTEt2BER 26, 1977 Page 3 <br /> Dick Benson, City Administrator, informed the FLOOD INSURANCE <br /> City Council that we are in recei�t of a letter <br /> � from the Department of Housing & Urban Development <br /> dated August 29, 1977, which states : <br /> "This letter confirns the intention of our Flood <br /> Insurance Specialist, Larry L. Bailey, to attend <br /> a public meeting i•iollday, September 26, 1977 at <br /> 7: 00 P.M, in the Orono City Hall, City Council <br /> Chambers. <br /> The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the Orono, <br /> Minnesota Flood Insurance Study and answer general <br /> questions regarding the National Flood Insurance <br /> , Program. Representatives of the Department of <br /> 2Jatural Resources and the study contractor will <br /> also be there. <br /> 4Je have enclosed a sample news release which you <br /> may wish to use to publicize the meeting in your <br /> local newspaper. Also, we suggest that snecial <br /> notices be sent to financial institutions , <br /> insurance agents, and real estate brokers servicing <br /> � your comr.�unity as these groups have a special <br /> interest in keeping abreast of the community' s <br /> status in the program. <br /> Please let us know if there is any other information <br /> you need in advance of the r.�eeting. " <br /> t End of letter <br /> Council Meeting - Septeriber 26 , 1977 <br /> i•ir. Larry Bailey, representing HUD, Ms. Patricia <br /> • Bloomgren, representing DNR, and P4r. Larry Dahlen, <br /> representing Barr Engineers , reviewed the Flood <br /> S Insurance Study. <br /> S i�Ir. Bailey commented that "this is a preliminary <br /> presentation and within ten months , the program <br /> will be finalized_ All cities are required to <br /> comply to minimum standards outlined by HUD and <br /> if cities do not comply, Federal funding is not <br /> , jeopardized if there are no homes in the approved <br /> flood plains. P�Zr. Bailey commented that no <br /> � construction should occur below elevation 932. 0, <br /> and if homes are located below this elevation, they <br /> would require flood insurance. The City would have <br /> 90 days to oppose the study and one year to appeal <br /> the flood plain areas. " <br /> � <br />
