 .
REGULAR MEETING OF THE ORONO COUNCIL, JULY 11, 197 Page 26
Dick Benson, City Administrator, informed the City PETITION - SPEED LIMIT
Council of the following petition for reduced speed North Arm Drive
imits on North Arm Drive, which states:
We are petitioning that the speed limit on North
Arm Drive, Orono, between Loma Linda Avenue and West
Branch Road, be reduced from the present speed of
45 miles per hour to 30 m.p.h. This length of road
is approximately 4/10 of a mile long. North Arm
Drive running from North Shore Drive to Loma Linda
and from 9est Branch Road around the Lakeview Golf
Course is already posted at 30 m.p.h. The feeling
• of the neighborhood is that the 30 m.p.h. speed
limit should continue in our area due to the following:
 l. The number of homes along and adjoining the
stretch of road being discussed has increased
to a point where it is now residential in nature.
There are 39 hornes affected by this speed limit
. change.
 2. There are a large number of children crossing
this section of road everyday. Three dogs
have been killed and several injured in the
past two years. We would rather not wait for
a child to be hit to have the speed reduced.
Many residents have observed near accidents
between young people and cars travelling at
. 40 to 60 m.p.h. Below is a breakdown of the
children in the affected area:
 Nine - 1 to 5 years old
 Fourteen - 6 to 10 years old
Nineteen - 11 to 15 years old

3. Cars coming from the northern rural areas
down North Arm Drive seem rarely to have
reduced their speed to 45 m.p.h. when driving
through our neighborhood. This adds to the
already hazardous condition that exists with
a 45 m.p.h. speed limit.

The following signatures are on the petition:

• Jon Leppla, 4040 Dahl Road
Mr. & r2rs. Nelson, 4055 Dahl Road
• H. Meagher, 3980 Dahl Road
Andrew Dahl, 1055 North Arm Drive
Mr. & Mrs. McCurdy, 1045 North Arm Drive
Mr. & trs. Conrad, 1015 North Arm Drive
Mr. & Pirs. Johnsoii, 4175 Firest Lake Drive
Mr. & Prs. Loughlin, 4215 Forset Lake Drive
ir. & PIrs. Teeter, 4225 Forest Lake Drive
r. & Mrs. Franzel, 800 North Arm Drive
Mr. & Mrs. Hoffman, 790 North Arm Drive
Pr. & Mrs. Clark, 780 North Arm Drive
Mr. & Mrs. Olson, 710 North Arm Drive

(Continued)
