Conclusions:
Each of the boulder walls have adequate size, as the minimum boulder wall depth(20") is more than
adequate for the given site surcharge conditions (no dead load, no live load, or top slope), minimum wall
batter(10°), and the maximum wall height(3.8'). A 12" minimum boulder would actually meet minimum
safety requirements of:
SF sliding= 1.50
SF overturning= 1.50
SF bearing= 2.0
The walls have adequate spacing between them to avoid surcharging the lower wall, creating a global
stability issue. The minimum spacing requirement is 2H1, where H1 is the height of the lower wall. The
case for an acceptable margin of safery is further strengthened by the fact there is no slopes above, between
or below the walls, the soil on the site is good material, and the boulders are oversized relative to the
maximum wall heights.
Therefore, it is my professional opinion that the boulder retaining walls meet all minimum industry safety
factors, and will function properly and safely. These conclusions retained are based on my professional
opinion. These opinions are arrived in accordance with accepted engineering practices in this time and
location. No other warranty is implied or intended. Should additional information become available, this
report may be modified based on the new data.
Respectfully,
Michael.
