T0: City Council o
FROM: James Cosby, City Administrator
DATE: March 8, 1974
SUBJECT: 6 : 30 P.M. Meeting at City Offices, Monday, March 11, 1974
1. I will have for the Council at the 6 : 30 P.M. session a brief outline
of the program which Orono will undertake to test water in the City and
the latest on the septic system inspection method that we are considering
undertaking.
2. We have been informed this week that the Standard Oilwhich is our
gasoline supplier, will provide the City of Orono with only 75$ of its
1972 allocation. This directive is from the Federal government. Don' t
ask me how or why er they decided to use the 1972 figures or the 75$
of the allocation. In 1972 , the allocation we received was 37, 782 gallons
wr.ich means that 75 of that is approximately $28 ,000 gallons. In 1973 ,
we used 35, 120 gallons of gasoline. We are in the process of filing an
application to the Federal government requesting a full 100 of the 1972
allocation. We will just have to wait and see now whether or not we
will get it. We are also in the process of talk.ing in house as to steps
we can take to reduce gasoline expenditures.
One of the problems that the staff is currently having is that $0. 12 per
mile for car reimbursement on City business is just not sufficient. I
would like to ask the Council to consider raising that to $0. 15 per
mile reimbursement and that we consider adjusting the figure up or down
depending on the current rate.
3. I have just completed a telephone call to Dr. Blake in Washington, D.C. ,
and he has informed me that the Federal government in no way is going
to undertake a major investigation of Wayside Kennel. The entire
inspection is being turned over to Dr. Spitzer and according to Dr.
Spitzer, who is the local Federal inspector, the normal insF ct;.on
rocedt.re wi:,_1 be followed to review Mr. Larson ' s license.
4. Mr. John Eidem, Orono Liquor Store Manager, will be 65 years on the
31st of May of this year. Ztis my recommendation to the Council that we
continue Mr. Eidem in his current position and not retire him. Mr. Eidem
would like to continue as the liquor store manager and he appears to be
in good health and anxious to continue. He has done a good job for the
City and I would like to see him continue in this position at least for
the rest of the year and that at the end of this year, we again ask
him whether or not he would like to continue, and if it is his desire
to do so, that we continue him on a year by year basis.
