T
years. Areas with evident characteristics for wetland hydrology are those where the presence of wate has
an overriding influence on the characteristia of vegetation and soils(COE Delineation Manual, 1987)
Soils, vegetation, and hydrology were documented at representative transect locations along the wetl nd
edge. At each transect, the first plot was placed in an area that met the criteria to be a jurisdictional
wetland. Subsequent plots were placed upslope until jurisdictional wetland criteria were not met.At I ast
one upland plot and one wetland plot are documented on the Routine Wetland Delineation Data For filled
out for each transect. In some cases, additional plots were needed to clearly establish wetland bound ies.
The transect and plot locations are shown on Figures 4. Plant species cover was based on the percent erial
coverage visually estimated within a 30-foot radius of the plot for the sapling antl shrub layers and a 5 foot
radius for the herbaceous layer within the community type being sampled. Estimate of basal area for
dominant trees was determined by using a 10-factor prism. Total vegetation dominance for all strata as
determined using the "50/20 rule" (COE Delineation Manual, 1987). Soiis observations were made
immediately below the A-horizon. Primary and secondary hydrology indicators were generally evaluate to a
depth of 16 inches. Wetland boundaries were marked using pink pin flags labeled "wetland delineatio "
and surveyed using a Trimble PROXH sub-mecer GPS unit.
Results
Wetland A
Wetlands A is a Type 2/3/7 wetiand basin consisting of wet meadow, shallow marsh and hardwood swa p
communities. The wet meadow is dominated by reed canary grass and dogwoods. The shallow marsh
areas are dominated by narrow-leaved cattail. The hardwood swamp community is dominated by willo
and ash. Upland vegetation consisted primarily of mowed turf grasses and buckthorn. The soiis
encountered were mostly black loam/silty clay loam and olive gray clay loam. Soil saturation ranged fro 4
inches to zero inches below the ground surface. Primary hydrology was present at each transect. The
wetland boundaries follow a topographic break as well as vegetative break between dominant upland an
wetland species.
See AppendixA: Wetland Delineation Data formsfor more information on each transect.
City of Orono Project No: 139-08019
Wetland Delineation Report Bonestroo Page 3
