Areas with evident characteristics for wetland hydrology are those where the presence of wate has <br /> an overriding influence on the characteristia of vegetation and soils(COE Delineation Manual, 1987) <br /> Soils,vegetation, and hydrology were documented at representative transect locations along the wetl nd <br /> edge. At each transect, the first plot was placed in an area that met the criteria to be a jurisdictional <br /> wetland. Subsequent plots were placed upslope until jurisdictional wetland criteria were not met.At I ast <br /> one upland plot and one wetland plot are documented on the Routine Wetland Delineation Data For filled <br /> out for each transect. In some cases, additional plots were needed to clearly establish wetland bound ies. <br /> The transect and plot locations are shown on Figures 4. Plant species cover was based on the percent erial <br /> coverage visually estimated within a 30-foot radius of the plot for the sapling antl shrub layers and a 5 foot <br /> radius for the herbaceous layer within the community type being sampled. Estimate of basal area for <br /> dominant trees was determined by using a 10-factor prism. Total vegetation dominance for all strata as <br /> determined using the "50/20 rule" (COE Delineation Manual, 1987). Soiis observations were made <br /> immediately below the A-horizon. Primary and secondary hydrology indicators were generally evaluate to a <br /> depth of 16 inches. Wetland boundaries were marked using pink pin flags labeled "wetland delineatio " <br /> and surveyed using a Trimble PROXH sub-mecer GPS unit. <br /> Results <br /> Wetland A <br /> Wetlands A is a Type 2/3/7 wetiand basin consisting of wet meadow, shallow marsh and hardwood swa p <br /> communities. The wet meadow is dominated by reed canary grass and dogwoods. The shallow marsh <br /> areas are dominated by narrow-leaved cattail. The hardwood swamp community is dominated by willo <br /> and ash. Upland vegetation consisted primarily of mowed turf grasses and buckthorn. The soiis <br /> encountered were mostly black loam/silty clay loam and olive gray clay loam. Soil saturation ranged fro 4 <br /> inches to zero inches below the ground surface. Primary hydrology was present at each transect.
