Ln new construction, required smolce detectozs shall receive their pri- <br /> mary power fzom the building wiring when such tiviring is served fxom a commercial source and <br /> shall be equipped with a battery bacicup.The detector shall emit a signal when the batteries are Iow. <br /> tiYiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch other than those required for over- <br /> current pzotection. Smolce detectozs may be solely battery operated when installed in existing <br /> build.ings; or in builclings tivithout commercial power; or in buildings�vhich undergo alterations, <br /> ,repairs or additions regulated by Section 310.9.1.2. <br /> 3I0.9.1.4 Location within dwelling units. Iz►dwelling units, a detectoz shall be installed in each <br /> sleeping room and at a point centcally located in the corridor or area giving access to each separate <br /> sleeping area.When the dwelling unit has more than one story and in d�vellings with basements, a <br /> detectoz ahall be installed on each story and in the basemenG Xn d�velling units tivhere a story or base- <br /> ment is split into two or more levels, the smolce detector shall be installed on the upper level, except <br /> that�vhen the lotivez level contaiuns a sleeping area, a detector shall be installed on each level. When <br /> sleeping rooms are on an upper level, the detector shall be placed at the ceiling of the upper level iun <br /> close proximity to the stairway, xn dwelling units tivhere the ceiling height o£a room operi to the <br /> halhvay serviung the bedrooms exceeds that of the hallway by 24 inches (610 mm) or more, smoke <br /> detectors shall be i�zistaIIed in the halltivay and i,n the adjacent room. Detectors shall sound an alarm <br /> audible in all sleeping areas of the d�velling unit in which they are located. <br />
