Memorandum ,Bonestroo
2335 Highway 36 W
St.Paul,MN 55113
To: Christine Mattson, Project: 460 East Long Date: 7-22-11 Te1651-6364600
Melanie Curtis Lake Road Fax 651-636-1311
From: John Smyth Client: Orono www•bonestroo.wm
Re: Wetland Buffer Compliance Check File No.: 139-08000
The above reference address was reviewed on 7-22-11 to determine if the wetland buffer had
been established per the approved plan completed by Loucks Associates dated 6/19/08. Spoil
piles and construction debris have been removed from the buffer, however the area of the buffer
lacks topsoil and as a result has limited vegetative establishment. There is also currently a play
house structure within the buffer that will need to be placed outside the buffer. Due to the lack of
native vegetation in large portions of the buffer it currently is not acceptable. Areas with limited
native vegetation will require additional seeding. It is recommended that 2-3 inches of top soil or
compost is tilled in to provide nutrients to the soil prior to re-seeding.
In addition the buckthorn in the wooded area has not been removed per the approved plan. The
approved plan provided by Loucks Associates should be followed or the procedures listed below
should be followed for the buckthorn removal.
Buckthorn removal procedures.• European buckthorn greater than 0.5 inch diameter will need to
be cut within six inches of the ground and the stump treated with an appropriate herbicide(e.g.
25% solution of glyposate, pic%ram, or equivalent) within 10 minutes after cutting. Cut stems
can be allowed to fall where cut, and then decompose on the ground over time. These efforts
shall occur when temperatures area above 25f to ensure herbicide uptake into roofs All other
buckthorn smaller then 0.5 inch diameter should be treated with appropriate hebicide and with a
seasona/ly appropriate method.
Once the buckthorn and other areas are ready for seed they should be seeded with the approved
seed mix attached.
A few companies that provide buckthorn removal and native seeding include the following:
Prairie Restoration Inc.: (952) 955-3400
Minnesota Native Landscape: (320) 968-4222
K:\139\13908000\Word\Work_In_Progress\Wedand Ordinance Compliance\460 East Long Lake Road\CM&MC_JS^460 East Long Lake Road 7-22-11 wmpliance check.doa [TNS 06-2010]Page 1 of 3
