MINUTES OF THE <br />ORONO CITY COUNCIL MEETING <br />Monday, February 13, 2012 <br />7:00 o’clock p.m. <br />_____________________________________________________________________________________ <br /> <br /> Page 1 of 22 <br /> <br />ROLL CALL <br /> <br />The Orono City Council met on the above mentioned date with the following members present: Mayor <br />Lili Tod McMillan, and Council Members Cynthia Bremer, Doug Franchot, Aaron Printup, and David <br />Rahn. Representing Staff were City Administrator Jessica Loftus, City Clerk Lin Vee, Finance Director <br />Ron Olson, Assistant City Administrator of Long-Term Strategic Planning Michael Gaffron, Planning <br />Coordinator Melanie Curtis, Planner Ben Gonzola, City Attorney Soren Mattick, City Engineer David <br />Martini, and Recorder Jackie Young. <br /> <br />Mayor McMillan called the meeting to order at 7:00 p.m. followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. <br /> <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF AGENDA <br /> <br />Item Nos. 15 – 18 were added to the Consent Agenda. <br /> <br />Franchot moved, Rahn seconded, to approve the Consent Agenda as amended. VOTE: Ayes 5, <br />Nays 0. <br /> <br /> <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES <br /> <br />*2. COUNCIL WORK SESSION OF JANUARY 23, 2012 <br /> <br />Franchot moved, Rahn seconded, to approve the minutes of the Orono City Council work session of <br />January 23, 2012, as submitted. VOTE: Ayes 5, Nays 0. <br /> <br />*3. REGULAR COUNCIL MEETING OF JANUARY 23, 2012 <br /> <br />Franchot moved, Rahn seconded, to approve the minutes of the Orono City Council meeting of <br />January 23, 2012, as submitted. VOTE: Ayes 5, Nays 0. <br /> <br /> <br />PRESENTATION <br /> <br />4. WESTONKA SCHOOLS UPDATE – KEVIN BORG, SUPERINTENDENT <br /> <br />Kevin Borg addressed the City Council regarding the academic and financial progress they have made <br />over the past year at the Westonka School District. The Westonka School District this past year ranked <br />fourth in math and fifth in reading on the MN Comprehensive Assessment. Borg noted there are over 340 <br />school districts in the state of Minnesota. In 2008, Shirley Hills Primary School was recognized as a Blue <br />Ribbon School and approximately one month ago Hilltop School was nominated for the Blue Ribbon <br />School award. <br /> <br />The Westonka School District's current focus is how a student's studies can be personalized and geared <br />towards the 21st Century. The school's efforts are focused on instruction relating to a student's ability and <br />interest as well as looking at 21st Century skills such as problem solving, critical thinking, creative <br />thinking, and communication skills. <br />Item #02 - CC Agenda - 02/27/2012 <br />Approval of Council Minutes 02/13/2012 [Page 1 of 22]
