Jeremy Barnhart
From: Denny Walsh
Sent: Monday, June 29, 2015 3:05 PM
To: Jeremy Barnhart; Jessica Loftus
Subject: FW: Seasonal Vacation Rental Homes
FYI
Dennis Walsh
Orono City Council
612.414.5055
From: 7ohn Purdy [johnkpurdy@aol.com]
Sent: Monday, June 29, 2015 2:27 PM
To: Denny Walsh
Subject: Seasonal Vacation Rental Homes
Dear Councilman Walsh-
I have been a resident of Orono for 42 years, living happily on Fagerness Point. In the last
couple of years, several of our neighbors have listed their homes on VRBO or Air-B and B for
short term rentals. While we empathize with their need to rent to defray the costs of owning
their homes, it does, in my mind, present a problem for our neighborhood. Often the rentals
are for one or two weeks and the purpose of the renter is to enjoy the lake and host parties
for their families and friends. Occasionally, those parties can be loud, late and boisterous
with parking spilling over into neighbors turnarounds and lawns. The end of Fagerness Point
is a narrow road with very limited on-street parking.
In a larger sense, vacation rentals disrupt our sense of neighborhood. I never know who is
residing in the rental houses because they come and go often, with children we don't know
walking across our yards and using our docks for their recreation. The renters, justifiably,
don't have time or interest in building lasting relationships or a sense of community with
the neighborhood.
I don't want to sound like a grouchy old guy, but the council asked for citizen input on the
issue and I am happy to provide it.
Sincerely,
John Purdy
1975 Fagerness Point Road
1
