Jeremy Barnhart
From: Julie Yahoo <jltoman@yahoo.com>
Sent: Friday, March 18, 2016 10:07 AM
To: Jeremy Barnhart
Subject: RE: Vacation Rental ordinances
Jeremy, Thanks for sending this over.
I appreciate the opportunity to respond. I have be renting my house out on VRBO for 3 years and require a 5 night
minimum stay and also screen every new renter. I only allow maximum of 4 people to stay in my house at any time. i
have been in very regular communication with all of my close neighbors and they have all been informed that if there
ever any issues or impact on their quality of `lake life"they should call me. I have received zero complaints and have
had my next door neighbor property managing the rental for all 3 years. So far for in 2016, 50%of my renters are return
renters.
I started doing this 3 years ago, after unsuccessfully trying to sell my house in 2011 and 2012 when my house value was
"underwater" . I work in Boston and divide my time 50-50 between both locations and this weekly rental business
during Summer only allowed me to hold on to my house and not do a short sale. I would very much like to continue to
operate a weekly rental business in the Summer months. Please look at my listing and reviews VRBO Listing
#460106. My rental agreement covers most of what is included in this ordinance already
After reading through the proposed ordinance,I have no issue with Regulation#1.
#2 my insurance for using this as a rental property has made me comply the applicable codes for a house of my age fire
any additional regulations should be reviewed before being implemented.
I have issue with #3, as I have 2 primary residences, one in Boston where I work, and then this one in Orono where I
spend 50%of my time. If I am prohibited from renting it would cause me a significant financial hardship. I hope to retire
back in MN in a few years and use this property as my primary residence again.
Item#4, I may not personally be available within 30 minutes but I have 2 people who are close by who respond to any
issues and are available for any things that need to be fixed. This has never been a problem in my 3 years of doing this.
I am okay with all of the other points but do think this is a little excessive and should be taken into very serious
considerations amongst the small group of Short Term Rental Business Owners.
Please do not hesitate to reach out to me if you have any questions?
Thanks,
Julie Toman
1082 Loma Linda Ave.
From:Jeremy Barnhart [mailto:jbarnhart@ci.orono.mn.us]
Sent:Thursday, March 17, 2016 2:29 PM
To:jltoman@yahoo.com
Subject:Vacation Rental ordinances
Julie,
1
