MINUTES OF THE <br />ORONO CITY COUNCIL MEETING <br />Monday, June 9, 2014 <br />7:00 o’clock p.m. <br />_____________________________________________________________________________________ <br />  <br />Page 20 of 22  <br />  <br />(MAYOR/COUNCIL REPORT, Continued) <br /> <br />Printup noted there was some police activity in Long Lake on Friday and that the Orono Police and Long <br />Lake Fire Department responded to the scene in under three minutes. Printup stated even though Long <br />Lake no longer contracts with Orono for their police service, Orono still provides help from time to time. <br /> <br />Printup noted the City Administrator and himself met in Delano with some local officials from the <br />Highway 12 area and Mn/DOT to look at ways to make the Highway 12 corridor safer. <br /> <br />Loftus stated three state representatives were in attendance and that they indicated they would be willing <br />to support a funding bill if definite solutions are arrived at. Loftus indicated the push at the meeting was <br />the need to educate drivers. State Representative Joe McDonald advocated the creation of a community <br />corridor coalition to carry forward the discussion, which was supported by the group. <br /> <br />Loftus stated everybody at the meeting was united in ensuring that the local roadways are safe. Mn/DOT <br />indicated that in their view the rumble strips are effective and that there are limited engineering solutions. <br />Loftus stated the main thrust of the meeting was to get their concerns to Mn/DOT. Loftus stated to her <br />understanding Delano will be setting up another meeting in the next month or two. <br /> <br />Levang stated she has heard comments that people do not like to use that roadway but that in her view the <br />rumble strips have helped somewhat. Levang stated any added improvement would be very welcome. <br /> <br />Printup noted school is now officially out and that he would encourage everyone to drive safely over the <br />summer. Printup noted Long Lake Days will be happening later this week. <br /> <br /> <br />CITY ADMINISTRATOR’S REPORT <br /> <br />Loftus stated the City received notice from Three Rivers that the Dakota Trail will be resurfaced in July <br />and August. Three Rivers will have signs out the week before notifying the residents of what sections <br />will be closed. Loftus stated the information will also be posted on the City’s website. <br /> <br />Loftus noted she forwarded information she received from the City’s architect to the City Council on the <br />City Hall/Police Station project. Loftus stated they hope to have the plans and specifications to the City <br />Council by June 23. <br /> <br />Loftus indicated one of the aspects of the project involves new signage for the City Hall/Police Station <br />complex at the entrance points. The angled access point will be removed, with the other access point <br />closest to the City Hall building remaining. <br /> <br />Loftus displayed a sketch of the possible signage. Loftus indicated the signs meet the City’s residential <br />sign code. Loftus stated the City’s current sign is approximately six feet high and approximately ten feet <br />wide, but that it is erected at an angle that makes it difficult to see. <br /> <br />Bremer commented she is not sure whether she likes the signs being offset. <br /> <br />Printup stated the current sign is more representative of the other signs in the City. <br /> <br />Item #02 - CC Agenda - 06/23/2014 <br />Approval of Council Minutes 06/09/2014 <br />[Page 20 of 22]
