The City of Orono has long been utilizing GIS and mapping in their
day to day activities. Bolton&Menk has been managing GIS data and hosting a web based GIS
application for the City of Orono since 2012.
The current utility mapping which is available to staff can be considered schematic in most areas and
incomplete in others. The City has identified that it is critical to have accurate locations of their utility
infrastructwe in order to efficiently respond to maintenance and service needs as they occur. City Staff
has been actively collecting GPS locations of Sanitary and Water infrastructure since 2011. As this GPS
field work nears completion,we would like to assist the city by integrating the GPS collected information
into existing utility mapping. This process will create a more reliable resource for locating and
identifying infrastructure for all city staff.
We would also like to assist the city by conducting a GPS collection and mapping update of the
stormwater system. Currently, there is very little information available which documents the location of
storm sewer infrastructure. This will also be a necessary step moving forward in the MS4 permitting
process.
The following describes our project approach and scope of services for the proposed GIS work.
PROJECT TASKS
Task 1—Sanitary Sewer System Mapping Improvements
Upon project initiation, Bolton&Menk will work with city staff to verify all GPS collected points have
been provided.Bolton&Menk will review all collected points and replace existing schematic
infrastructure locations with those that have been collected through GPS.We will then initiate the utility
N:Proposals\Orono\GIS Utility Map Updates 011915\UtilityMapUpdates.docx
