LESTER SERIES <br /> The Lester series consists of very deep, well drained soils that formed in calcareous loamy glacial till on till <br /> plains and moraines.These soils have moderate permeability.Their slopes range from� to 70 percent. <br /> �(ean annual precipitation is about 23 inches. �(ean annual temperature is about=47 degrees F. <br /> TAXONO�IIC CLASS: Fine-loamy, mixed, superactive, mesic Nlollic Hapludalfs <br /> TYPICAI. PEDON: Lester loam with a conver slope of about 9 percent on a ground <br /> moraine in a cultivated field. (Colors are for moist soil unless otherwise noted.) <br /> Ap--O to 7 inches; very dark grayish brown (IOYR 3/2) loam, grayish brown (lOYR 5/2) <br /> dry; moderate fine subangular blocky structure; friable; many fine roots; about 3 percent <br /> gravel; sli�htly acid; abrupt smooth boundary. (6 to 10 inches thick) <br /> Btl--7 to 21 inches; brown (lOYR 4/3) clay loam; moderate medium subangu(ar blocky <br /> structure; firm; many very tine roots; common very dark grayish brown (IOYR 3/2) clay <br /> films on Paces of peds and few very dark gray (lOYR 3/1) organic coats on faces of peds; <br /> about 2 percent gravel; slightly acid; clear smooth boundary. <br /> Bt2--21 to 38 inches; dark yellowish brown (lOYR 4/4) clay loam; moderate medium <br /> subangular blocky structure; friab(e; common fine roots; common dark grayish brown <br /> (I OYR 4/2) cfay films on faces of peds and few very dark brown (lOYR 2/2) organic <br /> coats on faces of peds; about 3 percent gravel; s(ightly acid; gradual smooth boundary. <br /> (Combined Bt horizon is l0 to 40 inches.) <br /> Bk1--38 to 50 inches; yellowish brown(lOYR 5/4) loam; weak medium subangular <br /> blocky structure; friable; few fine roots; common very pale brown (lOYR 8/2) carbonate <br /> threads; about 2 percent gravel; violently effervescent; sfightly alkaline; clear wavy <br /> boundary. <br /> Bk2--50 to 60 inches; yellowish brown (lOYR 5/4) loam; weak medium subangular <br /> blocky structure; friabfe; common fine distinct yellowish bro�vn (lOYR 5/6) relict Fe <br /> concentrations; common very pale brown (lOYR 8/2) carbonate threads; about 2 percent <br /> gravel; violently effervescent; slightly a(kaline; clear wavy boundary. <br /> C--60 to 80 inches; yel(owish brown (I OYR 5/4) foam; ; massive; friable; common <br /> medium distinct yellowish brown (lOYR 5/6) re(ict Fe concentrations and few fine <br /> distinct light bro�vnish gray (lOYR 6/2) relict Fe depletions; about 1 percent gravel; <br /> strongly effervescent; sliahtly alkaline. <br /> TYPE LOCATION: Wright County, Nlinnesota; about 3 miles west of Otsego, 1460 <br /> feet south and 200 feet west of the northeast comer of Sec. 15, T.121 N., R.24 W.; USGS <br /> Big Lake quadrangle; lat. 45 degrees 17 minutes 29 seconds N.; long. 93 degrees 41 <br /> minutes 3 seconds W., NAD27 <br /> RANGE IN CHARACTERISTICS: Depth to free carbonates ranges from 20 to 54 <br /> inches. Rock fragments of miYed lithology comprise 1 to 8 percent of the volume of the <br /> control section. <br />
