Box 66, Crystal Bay, MN 55323 <br /> 952-249-4600 <br /> Decks <br /> Building Permits are required for any deck or patio. <br /> Frost Footin�s are required for any deck that is attached to a dewelling or garage that has a frost <br /> footings. <br /> Guardrails - All decks that are 30" or more above grade must be protected by a guardrail. Such rail <br /> shall be 36" minimum in height. Open guardrails and stair railings shall have intermediate rails or <br /> an ornamental pattern such that a 4" diameter sphere cannot pass through. <br /> Overhan in� Decks - Joists should not overhang beams by more than two feet, nor should beams <br /> overhang posts by more than one foot unless a special design is approved. <br /> Stairwav- If a stairway is to be provided, it shall be not less than 36 inches in width. 8" maYimum <br /> rise - 9" minimum run - 6'8" minimum headroom. <br /> Handrails - Handrails shall be provided to all stairways having 4 or more risers (private residential <br /> only). See page 5 for more information. <br /> Live Load - All decks shall be designed to support a live load of 60 pounds per square foot. <br /> Flashin� - All connections between deck and dwelling shall be weatherproo£ Any cuts in exterior <br /> finish shall be flashed or caulked. <br /> Joist Hangers - Header joists more than six feet long and tail joists over 12 feet long shall be <br /> supported by approved framing anchors such as joist hangers. <br /> Wood Required-All exposed wood used in the construction of decks is required to be of approved <br /> wood of natural resistance to decay (redwood, cedar, ect.)or approved treated wood. This includes <br /> posts, beams,joists, and decking. <br /> �ecial Des�n Note- Some deck designs may not be appropriate should the placement of a screen <br /> porch or 3-season porch on the deck platform be a future consideration. Porch setback requirements <br /> are not the same as deck setbacks. <br /> Rec�uired Inspections: <br /> 1. Footin�s - After holes are dug, but prior to pouring of concrete. <br /> 2. Framin� - Prior to laying decking. Framing inspection may be done when <br /> deck is complete if deck is not enclosed underneath. <br /> 3. Final - When deck is completed. <br />
