SUMMARY OF REQUEST
There is a conflict between the Orono Zoning Code and Miiuiesota Statutes regarding the
length of time that electioii signs are allowed to be posted:
- City Code allows theni froiii "2 iilontlis before the election" until "30 days
following the election".
- State Stahrtes allow them from "August 1" uiitil "10 days following the
election".
Tlus amendnlent will revise the City Ordiiiance to conforili to tlie provisioils of the State
Statutes.
The aniendnient also provides for reiiloval of illegally erected temporary signs. This
reinforces the City's authority for its loilg-tiiile practice of removiilg signs in the right-of
way and those that iiilpeded safety by obstlicting vision.
Please review the attached memo dated August 28 fioiiz City Clerk Lin Vee. On August
28 the City Coi.uicil voted 5-0 to follow State Sttufie Seciioii 211B.045, and direct siaff
to proceed witli this zoiiuig code aiiiendil7ent. A draft uneildment is attached for review -
and/or disctission.
Staff Recommendtion
Plaiming Coiiuiiissioil should hold the public hearing. Siaff reconunends tht Plaiuiing
Conuiiissioii recoiimend adopi:ioii of ihe ordiiiailce auzendinent per Exhibit A.
