The
requirement providcs un effectivic eloctricatly conlinuvus path in an cfCort to conduct stray voltage%ument
snfely to ground. "Thc NEC also states that it is good practice to bond all metallic systetns und objects. In
accordance with thesc requirements,WARDFLEX'requires the gas-piping system to be bondod to the
elech-ical earth groundingystcm of the swcture thmugh the use of a bonding clamp and wire.
• The bonding point must be in as close proximity to thc cicetrical panel as practical;close pt+oximity of
the bonding point to the gas meter is also desirable.
• The wire gauge for this bond must bc sizcd,at a minimum, for the full amperage available through the
cicctric scrvicc.
• Further minimiZing imEwdnce over the txmding assembly is desirnble. The NEC should be referred to
for additional requirements nnd specific techniques for bondingu►d-ounding.
Por attachment to thc WARDFLFJC'D gas
piping system, txmding clamps must bc 60NDING WR
attached to the WARDFI,E?C°D brass fitting,to
a steel manifold,or to a rigid pipe component
c:onnuctcxl to a WARDFLEX'1°fitting. The
corrugated stainless stecl poriion of thc gas r,
piping system shull not bc used as the bonding N_
.
8It8ClII1CIlt pOint uRdef Blly CIICU1i1St971C8. WARDFtEX TU61NG
The WARDFLF_Xflexible gas piping or
other gas system components shall not be uscxl
as a grounding elech-ode or as the grounding
path for appliances or electrical systems. doNoiNc enMP
{ON fITTING,NOT TU61NG)
Bonding and grounding requirements are nlso CSST FITTING
contained in NFPA 54 National Fuel Gas
Code. NFPA 54 specifically requires:
"...each above ground por[iot oJa gas piprng system which is lifely 10 become eitergized shall be
electrically continuous and boitded to o designed, permanent, low impedance e,(fective ground
jault current path."
Proper grounding and bonding may rrduce the risl:of damage and fire from a lightning strike. Lightning is
a hihly destructive force. Even a nearby lightning strike that docs not stril:e a structure directly can cause
systems in the structure to bacome energized. If the systems tre not properly bonded, the difference in
potential between the systems may cause the charge to arc to another system. Arcing can cause dage to
CSS'f. }ionding and gmunding as set forth aixrve should rexiucc the risl:of arcing and related damage.
Dcpending upon conditions specific to thc location of the structure in which the WARDFLEXsystem is
being installed, includinbut not limited to whethet or not lhe area is prone to lighhing, thewof thc
structure should consider whether or not u lighing protection system is necessary or uppropriate.
Lightning protection systems are beyond the scope of lhis bulletin, but are covered by I•IFpA 780 tvhich is
the Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems, and other standards.
Released On: 11/1/06
Scanned by CamScanner
