The
requirement providcs un cffective electrically oontinuvus path in an eflort to conduct stray voltage%urrent
safely to ground. Thc NEC also states that it is gooci practicc to bond all mctallic systems and ohjects. In
accordancevith thesc requirements,WARDFLEXrequires the gas-piping system to be bonded to the
elech-ical earth gmunding systcm of the swcture thmuh the usc of a bondinclamp andvire.
• The bonding point must be in as close proimity to thc clectrical panel as practical;close proYimity of
the bonding point to the gas meter is aldesirahle.
• The wire gauge for this bond must bc sizcd,nt a minimum, for the full amperge available through the
clectric scrvicc.
• Further minimizing impodance ovcr the bonding assembly is desirnble. The NEC should be referred to
for additional requirements andccific techniques for bonding und grounding.
For attachment to thc WARDFLEX°D gas
piping sysiem, bonding clamps must bc eONDING WIR
attached to the WARDFI,EX°D brass fittins,to
a steel manifold,or to a rigi'd pipe component
c:onntcxl to a WARDII,EX''fitting. NFPA 54 specifically requues:
"...each above ground ponion oja gas prping system whicli is lifcly to become energized shnl!be
electrically continuous and bonded to a designed, permcrnent, low impedance e,(fective ground
jault current palh."
Proper grounding and bonding may reduce tle risk of daunaGe and fire from a lightning strike. Lightning is
a highly dcstrvctive force. Even a neerby lightning strike that docs not stril:e a structure directly can caus
systems in ihe sucture to become energized. If the systems ure not properly bondcd, the diffence in
potential betwcen the systems may cause the charge to arc to another system. Arcing can cauce dage to
i
CSS"I'. 13onding and gmunding as set forth ahove should reciuce the rik of arcing and related damage.
Depending upon conditions specific to the location of the structure in which ihe WARDFLEXy,stem is
being installed, including but not limited to whether or not the area is prone to lightning, the owneof thc
structure shouid considet whether or not u lightning protection system is necessary or appropriate.
Lightning protection systems are beyond the scope of this bulletin, but are cavered by NFpp 7gpyhich is
the Standard for the Installation of Lightning Protection Systems, and other standards.
Released On: l 1/1/06
Scanned by CamScanner
