SO II Stork Twin City Testing Corporation
Materials Technology
Proposed Addition at Residence 965 Edgewood Hills Road Page 5 of 9
Orono, Minnesota
Stork Twin City Testing Corporation Project #3106831
4.1 Project Data
We understand that an addition on the west side of the existing house is proposed. The
addition will be approximately 32' by 56' and have either a poured concrete or masonry
foundation with a wood frame structure. The floor slab of the addition will match the
slab elevation of the lower level of the existing house.
4.2 Discussion/Site Preparation
The soils encountered by the soil borings showed very soft fill underlain by topsoil
(borings B1 and B2) then terminating in tean clay glacial till. The existing fill and buried
topsoil is not suitable to support the foundation for the proposed addition. Either a soil
correction would need to be performed or the foundation would need to be lowered
beneath the fill/topsoil layers and be supported by the suitable natural soil encountered
at the site. Minimal soil correction would be needed for floor slab support.
Site preparation should consist of removing the surface vegetation/topsoil and fill from
the proposed buiding addition area. The subcut should continue to remove very soft
clays encountered beneath the topsoil. Engineered fill may then be placed to attain
footing elevation and site grades. The alternative would be to lower the foundation
through the fill and topsoil layers and support the addition on the firm natural soil.
The following tabulation shows the minimum recommended depth to competent soils for
building support at the respective boring locations:
Boring Ground Surface Minimum Approximate Elevation
Number Elevation Excavation of Competent Soil
(Ft) Depth (Ft) (Nearest '/2 Ft)
B1 987.5 11 976'/2
B2 986.1 8 978
B3 987.1 10'/2 976'/z
B4 992.8 10'/2 982'/2
This agreement shall be governed exclusively by the general terms and conditions of sale and performance of testing services by Stork Twin City
Testing,Inc.a North Carolina business corporation("TCT")dd.02/04/2001. In no event shall Stork Twin City Testing,Inc.be liable for any
consequential, special or indirect loss or any damages above the cost of the work. Payment is due within 30 days of invoice.
