MINUTES OF THE TRUTH IN TAXATION HEARING <br />HELD AT 7:00 P.M. ON MONDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2000 <br />is IN THE ORONO COUNCIL CHAMBERS <br />Members Present: Mayor Gabriel Jabbour and Council Members Kelley, Peterson, and <br />Sansevere. Council Member Flint arrived at 7:12 p.m. <br />Staff Present: Ron Moorse, City Administrator, Finance Director Tom Kuehn, and <br />Recording Secretary Jackie Young <br />The meeting was called to order at 7:04 p.m., by Mayor Jabbour. <br />There was one person in attendance for this meeting. <br />City Administrator indicated the purpose of the Truth in Taxation hearing was to provide an <br />opportunity for citizens to obtain information regarding the proposed 2001 Budget and Tax <br />Levy. <br />Moorse presented the 2001 Budget and Tax Levy to the Council. The proposed property tax <br />levy for 2001 is $2,443,350, which is an increase of 3.8 percent over the 2000 levy. Moorse <br />stated the increase will help address the City's need for increased police service, enable <br />the City to maintain their high - quality staff, and strengthen the City's ability to address upcoming <br />capital needs. <br />Kuehn indicated the levy is less than 50 percent of the general fund revenues. <br />• Mayor Jabbour asked if there were any public comments. <br />Ed Callahan, Orono resident, inquired whether the City has allocated any money towards the <br />construction of the new fire station. Callahan commented in his opinion the City needs to make <br />provision in its upcoming budget for this project. <br />Moorse indicated the 2001 levy reflects the City's plans for the funding of upcoming capital <br />needs, especially the City's share of the cost of replacing the Long Lake fire station. <br />Mayor Jabbour stated the construction of the new fire station will be one of the main issues <br />facing the new City Council. Jabbour commented the committee has identified a site in Orono. <br />Jabbour noted the City Council is opposed to the condemnation of this site, and is encouraging <br />the committee to look at other possible sites. <br />Mayor Jabbour closed the public hearing at 7:17 p.m. <br />Moorse indicated the levy adoption or subsequent hearing will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, <br />December 11, 2000. <br />The meeting was adjourned at 7:17 p.m. <br />ATT ST: <br />inda S.
