City of Orono Project No: 000139-10047-0
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Page 9
CITY OF ORONO – OLD CRYSTAL BAY ROAD RECONSTRUCTION
4.0 Water Main Improvements
The majority of the existing water main was also installed in approximately 1962, with the northern
portion (approximately 700 feet) replaced in 1997 when the Ice Arena was constructed. The water main
runs along the west side of Old Crystal Bay Road from Old Highway 12 to approximately 280 feet south
of 6th Avenue. The older portion of the water main is 8 inches in diameter and is cast iron pipe. Given
the age of this pipe, we recommend it be replaced as part of this project. The newer (northern) portion
of the water main is 12 inches in diameter and is constructed of ductile iron pipe. We do not recommend
this portion be replaced as part of this project.
The proposed water main improvements are shown in Figure 3. These improvements include replacing
the existing 8-inch cast iron water main with 8-inch PVC water main. In addition, all hydrants and gate
valves along the older segments will be replaced, and water services will be replaced between the main
and the right-of-way line.
Water service will be maintained throughout the project by using temporary above-ground water mains.
Individual users will be notified and may experience short disruptions in service as they are switched from
the existing system to the temporary system and back to the permanent system.
Cost estimates for the proposed water main improvements are presented in the Appendix.
Item #10 - CC Agenda - 10/25/2010
Old Crystal Bay Road Reconstruction Feasability Study [Page 12 of 42]
