Ci.t� of ORONO <br /> � RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL <br /> � NO. 2260 <br /> � <br /> ' `: • � • • <br /> SPECIAL COMMENDATION - <br /> OFFICER MARR THOMTON <br /> WHEREAS, Mark Thomton has been an Orono Officer since <br /> February 1986, and <br /> WH1?REASo Mark Thomton was a Reserve Officer in Orono for <br /> a year previous to becoming an officer , and <br /> WHEREAS, Mark Thomton on July 23 , 1987 , while on duty, <br /> overheard a call to the South Lake Minnetonka Public Safety <br /> Department regarding a suicidal person• with a gun, possibly <br /> holding a hostage at an address in Greenwood. Officer Thomton <br /> recognized the name as a personal acquaintance of his from years <br /> past. Officer Thomton talked to the party on the phone finding <br /> the party to be intoxicated and very depressed, and <br /> • WHEREAS, Officer Thomton responded to the scene to <br /> assist South Lake Officers. Thomton talked the party into <br /> throwing out his handgun, which he had earlier discharged into <br /> the ceiling. Officer Thomton then sat down with the party in his <br /> kitchen, talking the party into accepting further assistance from <br /> paramedics on the scene who later brought the party into Hennepin <br /> County Medical Center for intervention processes, and <br /> WHEREAS , Chief Richard Young of the South Lake <br /> Minnetonka Public Safety Department said in part in a letter , <br /> "Officer Thomton was primarily responsible for the safe and <br /> orderly resolution of this potentially very dangerous situation" . <br /> NOW, TH��tLFOItE B�3 IT RSSOLVEDo that Officer Mark Thomton <br /> be commended for his counseling skills and compassion in bringing <br /> a sensitive and dangerous situation to a safe conclusion. <br /> Adopted by the City Council of the City of Orono, <br /> Minnesota at a regular meeting held September 28 , 1987 . <br /> •-- �------ ----------- <br /> Jame R.
