Client: City of Orono, MN Fax 651-636-1311
www.stantec.com
Re: 2011-001191 File No: 000139-11000-1
Project Review Information Summary:
Project Name/Location: Whipple Residence Boulder Landscape Retaining Wall
Developer/Property Owner: Whipple
Design Engineer/Firm: Paul Schimnowski/Criterium-Schimnowski
(MN #40126—Verified)
Documents Reviewed: Engineer's Letter, including design/construction notes
Site Plan (Date unknown) with Proposed Wall Layout
Design Wall Cross Section
Date Received: 11-2-11
Project Review Comments:
1. Project includes privately-owned boulder landscape retaining walls that will be
installed at #3095 (street unknown).
2. Site drawing submitted shows the wall layout relative to boundaries, buildings and
other site features. Deviation from this layout is not approved.
3. A geotechnical report and recommendations were not provided. Soil properties
for the retaining wall were assumed in the design notes submitted. Engineer of
Record requires field verification of assumptions.
4. Boulder wall design drawings were prepared by a professional engineer, licensed
in Minnesota, and plan content appears appropriate to direct retaining wall
construction. However, wall designer must clarify the following design
parameters:
a. Whether design includes driveway surcharge:
letter, 2"d paragraph, states no surcharge was considered, 4th paragraph
states that it was. Wall location appears to be adjacent to driveway.
b. Minimum bearing capacity of foundation soils is required:
Letter, 4th paragraph, states 1,500 psf allowable bearing capaciry is assumed,
drawing states 2,500 psf is required.
5. Calculations for global/slope stability were not submitted. Applicant shall have
actual site conditions evaluated by a qualified design professional to determine
whether or not global stability analysis is required and ensure that in-situ soils and
backfill design properties indicated on the plans are verified. Submit
determination in writing.
Submit documentation verifying conformance with design and construction
requirements to City.
