ORONO POLICE DEPARTMENT

REQUEST FOR COUNCIL ACTION

Date: February 22, 2016
Item No: 10
________________________________________________________________________
Department Approval: Administrator Reviewed: Agenda Section:
Name: Correy Farniok JML Public Safety
Title: Police Chief
________________________________________________________________________

Item Description: Ordinance Amendment – Big Island Nature Park
________________________________________________________________________
List of Exhibits:
A – Ordinance Amendment – Section 22-116
________________________________________________________________________

DISCUSSION:

The Police Department has enforcement authority over Big Island Nature Park. However, during
the winter months we have received several complaints of snowmobiles driving around the Park.
Current ordinance prohibits motor vehicles and snowmobiles. The Orono Police Department
does not have snowmobiles or other vehicles to enforce this ordinance and we have asked the
Hennepin County Sheriff Office (HCSO) to assist us with enforcement. The HCSO utilizes
special deputies to assist them with enforcement activities. The proposed amendment adds
HCSO deputies and Special deputies, Three Rivers Park Police and MN Department of Natural
Resources (DNR) to have jurisdiction to enforce any violation of these rules and any state or
local laws which occur on park property.

COUNCIL ACTION REQUESTED:

Consider motion to approve the ordinance amending section 22-116.
