WITHIN THE CITY OF EXCELSIOR <br /> WHEREAS,the City of Excelsior is one of the oldest,continuously-settled communities in <br /> the State of Minnesota; and . <br /> yVHEREAS, one of the key values of the 1850s founders of Excelsior was t� have a vital <br /> commercial center; and <br /> WI�R�AS,Excelsior has functioned for nearly a century and a half as the commercial hub <br /> of the South Lake Minnetonlca area; and <br /> • WHEREAS,during the suburbanization of the area over the past fifty years, Excelsior has <br /> maintained its position as a vital commercial center,fulfilling the role of a downtown for a regional <br /> population of more than 20,000 residents and the businesses who support them; and <br /> � WI�EREAS, The residents and businesses of the City of Orono have relied on the <br /> � convenience of the downtown Excelsior Post Office as they have traveled there for shopping and <br /> business transactions; and <br /> WHEREAS,the United States Postal Service has communicated that a distinct possibility <br /> exists that the Excelsior Post Office may relocate to a site not in Excelsior as soon as early 1998;and <br /> � WHEREAS,the contemplated relocation would not serve the best interests of the City of <br /> Orono nor the City of Excelsior for the sense of community and economic vitality of the South Lake <br /> Minnetonka area, � <br /> NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED by the Council of the City of Orono that it <br /> urges.the United States Postal Service to work closely and sincerely with the owners of private , <br /> property in Excelsior,as well as the City of Excelsior,to maintain a Post Office within the city limits <br /> of the City of Excelsior; and <br /> • page 1 of 2 <br />
