1
i
I
·.1
I
I
I
I
I
]
I
I
I
I
]
I
I
Basin l -Description
SER identified and delineated a Palustrine (=P) wetland complex that primarily
consisted of persistent emergent ( =EM l) vegetation, but also included areas of broad-leafed
deciduous forested (=FOl) portions and broad-leafed deciduous scrub-shrub (=SSl) portions.
Water regimes ranged from temporarily flooded (=A) in forested portions to seasonally
flooded (=C). Therefore, NWI classifications consisted of PFOIA, PSS lB, and PEMIC. This
wetland is a Type 1/3 according to Circular 39. We sampled soils, vegetation, and hydrology
at three wetland and three upland sampling points each marked with 4' wooden lath and orange
and black-stripped flagging. Site Field Forms (Appendix A) show detailed data collected from
these sample points.
The wetland sampling point (SPl-1 WET) met all three parameters. Dominant
vegetation consisted of reed canary grass (Phalaris anmdinacea, F ACW+). Soils were hydric
based on organic content and the black (2.5/N) color. We did not observe free water in a
borehole drilled to 26-inches, but other indicators included a relatively low landscape position
and obvious drainage patterns.
The upland sampling point (SPl-1 UP) met two of three parameters. Dominant
vegetation was hydrophytic and consisted of box elder (Acer negundo, FACW") and common
buckthorn (Rhamnus cathartica, F AC-) trees with a herbaceous understory. Soils were hydric
based on color and organic content. Soil was dry and crumbly. We did not observe free water
to a depth of 3 2-inches, nor did we determine the presence of any other conditions that were
favorable for wetland hydrology.
The upland sampling pit (SPI-2 WET) met two of three parameters. Dominant
vegetation was hydric and consisted of reed canary grass (Phalaris anmdinacea, F ACW+).
Soils were hydric based on organic content and a dark color (2.5/N). Wetland hydrology was .
based on a relatively low landscape position and drainage patterns, although we did not
observe any free water in a borehole drilled to 26-inches.
The wetland sampling point (SPI-3 WET) also met all three parameters. This area was
somewhat questionable because a predominance of reed canary grass obscured landscape
position and probably excluded other plants from becoming established.
