I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
I
r 11.; I
!I
I
I
11
Hydrology
Wetland hydrology is present when an area is inundated or the soil is saturated within a
major portion of the root zone which is usually within 12" of the surface. Areas saturated
more than 12.5% of the growing season meet the hydrology criterion but areas saturated less
than 5% of the growing season do not meet hydrology criteria. The accepted convention in
Minnesota is to call areas saturated for greater than 5% of the growing season jurisdictional
wetlands. The minimum required period of saturation is approximately 8 to 10 days in the
Minneapolis-St. Paul area. Drained wetlands require a more thorough investigation of the
hydrology. Furthermore, disturbances such as blocked culverts, beaver dams, and mining
require an investigation of the site history to determine jurisdictional status.
WETLAND DELINEATION
We marked the highest extent of the wetland basin with 4-foot wooden laths and
orange "wetland boundary" flagging tape. Svoboda Ecological Resources surveyed lath,
property boundaries, and derived areas using a Global Positioning Systems unit. We
established transects in a representative wetland-to-upland transition zones consisting of two
sample points: one in upland, and one in the wetland. We also sampled numerous locations
along the delineation line to verify our boundary, but we did not mark these locations. Field
data sheets describe the soil characteristics, plant communities, and hydrology for each sample
(see APPENDIX A). We marked sample points with a 4-foot lath and black and orange
diagonally striped flagging tape. We classified wetlands using National Wetlands Inventory
(Cowardin et al. 1979) and Circular 39 (Shaw and Fredine 1956) criterion.
Svoboda Ecological Resources
Project No.: 98-060-03 _J-
. -.. ~ ··, ..
Van Eeckhout Parcel
Mr. Charles Van Eeckhout
