To: Mark E. Bernhardson, City Administrator
From:
I Wr! ---TING /?
GC i i 3 a^
• yN r
John R. Gerhardson, Public Works Coordinator
Date: October 9, 1986
Subject: Petition Townline Road
Attached is a petition from residents on Townline Road
requesting weight restriction and speed reduction on Townline
Road.
They are requesting a year round weight restriction to
eliminate heavy truck traffic which they feel is causing damage
to the road and creating excessive noise and dust. They are
requesting a reduction in the speed limit from 40 MPH to 30 MPH
to create a safer condition for the residential pedestrian and
vehicle traffic.
Since the petition was recieved, the Orono Police Department
has conducted a preliminary study of the speed of vehicles. See
attached reports.
Because Townline Road is under the jurisdiction of three
Cities (Orono, Independence and Medina), I have checked with them
to get their views on the complaint.
Independence and Medina would agree to taking the necessary
steps to reduce the speed limit on the road but are not sure what
can be done to eliminate truck traffic.
If it is determined that truck traffir is to be eliminated,
all three communities will have to adopt an ordinance restricting
truck traffic.
A request for speed reduction, to be performed by Minnesota
Department of Transportation, can be done by resolutioi.
It it recommended that a resolution be drafted and signed by
Orono, Medina and Independence requesting a speed limit survey be
conducted to determine the safe and reasonable speed limit for
Townline Road and that further research be per."o-med to determine
whether or not truck traffic should be elimina
To: Mary C.
