Every dwelling unit and every guest <br />w rom in a hael or lodging house used fur sleeping purposes shall be provided with <br />srnuke detectors conforming to U.B.C. Standard No. 43-6. In dwelling units, <br />detectors shall be mounted on the ceiling or wall at a point centrally located in the <br />condor or area giving access to rooms used for sleeping purposes. In an <br />efficiency dwelling unit, hotel sleeping foom and in hotel suites, the detector shall <br />be centrally located on the ceiling of the main room or hotel sleeping room Where <br />sleeping rooms are On an upper level, the deter for shall be placed at the center of <br />the ceiling directly above the stairway. All detectors shall be located in accordance <br />— with approved rnan,.fact:i:er't in,tnurtitvns- When actuated, the detector shall <br />provide an alarm in the dwelling unit or guest room. <br />When alterations, repairs or additions requiring a permit and having a valuxion <br />in excess of $1000 occur. or when one or more sleeping rooms are added or <br />created in existing Group R. Division 3 Occupancies, the entire building shall be <br />provided with smoke detectors located as required for new Group R. Division 3 <br />Occupancies. <br />--' In new construction, required smoke detectors shall receive their primary <br />power from the building wiring when such wiring is served frorr a commercial <br />source. Wiring shall be permanent and without a disconnecting switch other than <br />those required for overcurrent protection. Smoke detectors may be battery oper- <br />ated when installed in existing buildings, or in buildings without commercial <br />power, or in buildings which undergo alterations, repairs or additions regulated by <br />the second paragraph of this sccti n. <br />_ A smoke detector shall be installed in the basement of dwelling units having a <br />stairway which opens from the basement into the dwelling. Such detector shall be <br />connected to a sounding device or other detector to provide an alarm which will be <br />audible in the sleeping area- <br />(b) Sprinkle:- Systems. When required by other provisions of this code, <br />automatic spnri .: terns and standpipes shall be installed as specified in <br />Chapter 38. <br />Heating <br />Sec. 1211. t very dwelling unit and guest room shall be provided with heat - <br />facilities capal,.e. of maintaining a room temperature of 70*E at a point 3 <br />above ttu floor in all habitable rooms. <br />Special Hazards <br />Sec. 1212. Chimneys and heating apparatus shall conform to the requirements <br />of Chapter 37 and the Mechanical Code. <br />The storage and handling of gasoline, fuel oil or other flammable liquids in <br />Division I Occupancies shall be in accordance with the Fire Code. <br />In Division I Occupancies, doors leading into rooms in which volatile flam- <br />mable liquids are stored or used shall be protected by a fire assembly having a one - <br />hour fire -protection rating. Such firt assembly shall be self -closing and shall be <br />posted with a sign on each side of the door in 1-inch block letters stating: FIRE <br />DOOR —KEEP CLOSED. <br />Every room containing a boiler or central heating plant in Division 1Occupan- <br />cies shall be separated from the rest of the building by not less than a one -hour <br />fin -resistive occupancy separation. <br />EXCEPTION: A s_paration shall nor be required for such rooms with equip- <br />ment servicing only one dwelling unit. <br />92 93 <br />
