BIG ISLAND VETERANS CAMP RE -OPENING <br />Sunday July 10th. What a <br />beautiful summer day for the re- <br />opening of the camp on Lake <br />Minnetonka, after having been <br />closed the past fou+ years This <br />camp was first established in <br />1920 as a Rest and Recreation <br />center for the veterans of World <br />War One. 58 acres of beautiful <br />woods, picnic areas, and shore- <br />line to enjoy. <br />Sunday more than 250 peo- <br />ple attended a flag raising <br />ceremony signalling the re- <br />opening of the camp Allen <br />Wlesdorf of the American <br />Legion as Master of ceremonies <br />spoke of the immediate plans <br />calling for it's opera' -)n as a day <br />recreation camp while the prep- <br />arations are being made to ac- <br />commndate overnite tent ,amp- <br />ere. Long range plans include <br />the construction of handicap - <br />pod accessible cabins and pic- <br />nic/cooking shelters as funds <br />became available. brief <br />speeches were made by Chuck <br />Lindberg, Tom Curtis, <br />and Jerry Cour- <br />toau prior to the flag raisrngs. <br />Chuck slid Tom were given the <br />how of raising the American <br />and POW -MIA flags as the <br />signal of re -opening the Camp. <br />Shortly afterward the group <br />raiNd a second American flag <br />a the dock area. All three flags <br />were donated by the Post. A <br />beautiful sight to see. All (hree <br />fA W whipping about in a cool <br />gentle Lreeze. After the flag <br />oerenlonies the crowd broke up <br />to enjoy 'hoar picnic lunches <br />end a boa ',if afternoon <br />A great big ''THANKS" <br />should be given to the media for <br />their coverage of this very <br />special event. Channels 4, 5, <br />11, and 17 each had teams of <br />reporters and cameramen to <br />(,over the day's events And <br />conducting int; rviews of Chuck., <br />Tom, and other participants. <br />Mention should be made that a <br />contingent of the 385th En- <br />gineer Croup, Army Reserve <br />from Fort Snelling was also <br />there to participate in the event. <br />Many people commenter+ :in <br />the newscasts of the ditlert, it <br />stations. The media's participa- <br />tion is greatly appreciated by all <br />the veterans. Events such as <br />this may help to dispel the out- <br />dated pubic misconception still <br />held by some that the Veterans <br />organizations are little more <br />!han drinking fraternities. Once <br />again, THANKS MEDIA for the <br />coverage. <br />Time should also be taken to <br />thank the several boaters who <br />gave the crop. i such assistance <br />to get to and from the island <br />when the paddlewheeler. Lady <br />of the Lake was unable to take <br />us to the island.
