M E T R O P O L I T A N C O U N C I L
Suite 300 Metro Square Building, Saint Paul, Minnesota 55101
0*E: December 31, 1985
TO: Metropolitan Council Task Force on Lake Minnetonka jqN 2 i
Lake Minnetonka Municipal Governments )
Lake Minnetonka Conservation District T
v ff
FROM: Arne Stefferud
SUBJECT: Calculations Used for Determining 1,17, Car-Trailar
?ark ing Spaces in 1983 Lake Minnetonka Task Force Report
Many of you have asked how the 1983 Lake Minnetonka Ta,," Force determined that
there was a total of 1,172 car -trailer parking spaces within 1,500 feet of
existing public access situ.
In the fall of M2, DNR staff counted spaces at existing publi: access
sites. They counted:
- Car -trailer spaces on publicly owned i ., adjacent to launch ramps.
- Spaces on publicly owned land within 1,500 feet of launch ramps that was
used for car -trailer Parking.
They also estimated available street parking of car -trailer spaces by measuring
the length )f streets or county roa, within a 1,500 foot radius of existing
public ramps that was available for parking hasea on the absence of posted
regulations. The lineal feet measurements for each road/street wa, _ .,ed by
50 (the length of one car -trailer parking space) to determine the nurru>er of
space it street parking. The calculation for street parking aid not factor
out potentially unusable spaces due 'Ln narrow road width, lack goad
shoulders, or presence o' driveways and private property that would negate the
use of some portions of a streetor road for car -trailer parking. (See * on
bottom of Table 2.)
.ihe lot parking and street parking calculations were checked oy Frank Mixa
(Lake Minnetonka Conservation District) and adJustments were incorporated into
the final calculations.
Table 1 is the estimate that was developed. I've added "che city location of
each access, names of roads/streets that werE measured and the zrne location
for each public boat access in the table to wha was originally published on
Jan. 6, 1983.
.able 2 illustrates the number of spaces counted in lots and the linear mea-
surement,L f roads/streets ithin 1.,500 `eet of Existing pubic boat access
sites.
SA3808-PHOPNI
12.13.35
