Brown Road Orono, MN 55391 Dear Mayor and City Council Members: ye 16 iY OF �_,•''-' 1 I had the unpleasant experience of visiting your community Sunday, September 8, to view a house entered in the Parade of Homes. Along with many other viewers I was duped into believing that it was legal to park on County Road 51. After an enjoyable tour of the homes, 1 returned to my car to find an officer writing tickets to unsuspecting visitors. There were no signs indicating that it was illegal to park in this area, and my car was not obstructing traffic in any way. All four of the tires were to the right of the solid white line on the right hand side of the road. I have been driving for 15 years and this is the first time I or anyone I have discussed this with, have ever heard that it was illegal to park on the shoulder of the road. What's more incredulous is the fact that one mile down the road the same situation existed. Cars were parked the same distance in from the road as my car and yet that officer was not handing out tickets. At my insistance, the ticketing officer wrote on my ticket that I was parked on the shoulder. While the officer was distributing all those tickets, he suggested we drivers weren't using common sense. Let me tell you, if he felt this was a hazardous situation, common sense would have compelled him to motion people on and to warn them thcy would be ticketed. Instead, he waited in his car until they parked and left to view the houses, then gave tickets until he ran out and had to send for more. Possibly, the only reason hundreds of othev,s were not ticketed by him was because he had used every ticket in the community.
