HOMEOWNERS ASSOCIATION MANAGEMENT PLAN
This Invasive Species Management Plan below summarizes monitoring and management activities
that should be performed by homeowners annually (starting in 2015) within conservation and tree
preservation areas (Figure 1) within the Bayside Meadows development.
Bayside Meadows Invasive Species Management Plan
Sprint Mana2ement Activities
The entire property should be walked. Invasive species seeds migrate onto sites via
animal traffic and droppings, wind, and water.
Identify re-sprouted (previously cut) buckthorn trees/saplings. Hand pull and discard in
trash or take to City brush drop site. Herbicide treatment is not effective in spring.
Replace protective tree wrappings with caging. If additional native trees or shrubs are
identified, protect with caging.
Note areas of other invasive species ( e.g. garlic mustard, common burdock, Canada
thistle) and hand pull prior to seed dispersal to prevent a population from becoming
established. Refer to fact sheets for species appropriate management technique.
Fall Mana2:ement Activities
The entire property should be walked. Invas ive species seed s migrate onto sites via
animal traffic and droppings, wind, and water.
Identify re-sprouted buckthorn trees/saplings. Spot treat with herbicide application
(glyphosate or Brush-B-Gon), or hand pull and discard in trash or take to City brush
droo site.
Identify concentrate d areas of buckthorn seedlings (0-3 inches in height). Spot treat
with herbicide application of glyphosate or Brus h-B-Gon.
Note areas of other invas ive s pecies (e.g. garlic mustard, common burdock, Canad
thistle) and hand pull prior to seed dispersal to prevent a population from becoming
established. Refer to fact sheets for species appropriate management technique.
G e nerally, effective removal of an established buckthorn population takes 5 or more years due to
annual germination of seedlings from the existing soil seed bank. After successful invasive species
removal from the first 2 to 5 years of active management, future management activities on the site
should be greatly reduced.
Prior to performing site management, it would be helpful to become familiar with the species that
need to be managed. Fact s heets pertaining to the identification and management of s pecific
invasive species previously observed on the site are included with this document (Appendix B).
Also, as invas ive species are removed, previously existing native species will be "released" from
dormancy. As new species emerge on the site, it will be important to correctly identify them as
natives for preservation rather than invasives requiring re moval.
Bayside Meadows Inv asive Species Management Plan
Page 2 of 3
