For more information, call Sandi <br />Lindstrom at 291-6390. <br />Solid Wnsto—The Council will hold a public meeting on a <br />revised Environmental Impact Statement "scoping," or pre- <br />liminary, document for the Ramsey -Washington County waste <br />to -energy project. The counties plan to build a 900-ton-per- <br />day waste processing plant in Newport. The meeting will be <br />held Jan. 10 at 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers. If you have questions, call <br />Wayne Nelson, Council planner, at 291-6406. <br />Citizen Participation —The Council will hold two public <br />meetings on a plan to expand citizen participation in Council <br />activities. The plan seeks to strengthen Council relationships <br />with local governments, minorities, women, people with dis• <br />abilities and people with low incomes. The first meeting will <br />be at 1:30 p.m., Jan. 24, in the Council offices. The second <br />will be at 7:30 p.m., Jan. 29, at Burnsville Senior High School, <br />600 E. Hwy. 13, Burnsville. If you have questions, call Lucy <br />Thompson at 291.6521. <br />Solid Waste —The Council will hold a public hearing an a <br />proposed new Solid Waste Management Development Guide/ <br />Policy Plan on Jan. 28 beginning at 1 :30 pm. and resuming at <br />7 pm. in the Council Chambers. The plan calls for a dramatic <br />reduction in use of landfills and an increase in recycling tech- <br />niques. It would require ending the dumping of unprocessed <br />solid waste in landfills after 1990, allowing disposal of only <br />residuals from processed waste after that date. If you have any <br />questions, or wish to submit written comments, contact P: <br />Smith, environmental planner, at 291.6408. <br />PUBLIC MEETING SET <br />ON LIGHT RAIL TRANSIT <br />The Regional Transit Board (RTB) and the Metropolitan <br />Council will hold a public meeting on alternatives for transit <br />improvements in three corridors in the Twin Cities Area, <br />Wednesday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Council Chambers. <br />Information based on recent studies of light rail transit <br />and other options will be presented by RTB and Council staff. <br />The public will be asked to comment on what transit improve- <br />ments are needed and whether LRT or expanded bus service <br />is test suited to meet the needs. <br />The corridors under consideration are from downtown <br />Minneapolis: 1) southwest to Minnetonka: 2) east to downtown <br />St. Paul, and 3) south along Hiawatha Av. to Bloomington. <br />STATE OF REGION EVENT SET FOR JANUARY <br />Preuing regional issues will be the focus of the Metropolitan <br />Council's annual State of the Region event Jan. 30 at the <br />Hilton Inn, 1330 Industrial Blvd., Minneapolis. The event, for <br />Public officials and interested citizens from throughout the <br />region, will feature a dinner address on the state of the region <br />by Council Chair Sandra Gardebri 9. <br />A "Rt gional Citizen of the Year" will also be named. <br />Four concurrent panel discussions on major issues will <br />begin at 4 p.m. Each will include a moderator, a presenter and <br />two reacting panelists. The topics are: <br />— Marketing Solid Waste Abatement: How Do We Get Two <br />Million People Involved? <br />— Keeping Sewage Out of the Mississippi: It's Everybody's <br />Problem. <br />- Transportation: How Can We Serve the Suburbs? <br />— Legislating Basic Health Benefits: Cost vs. Consumer <br />Protection. <br />Registration begins at 3:30 p.m. and the dinner at 6:30 p.m. <br />The event including dinner costs S13. For more information, call the Communi- <br />cations Department at 291.6464, <br />CO -COMPOSTING MEETING SET <br />"Co -composting: Its Role in the Metropolitan Area's Solid <br />Waste Management Strategy," is the topic of a meeting the <br />Metropolitan Council will hold from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursday, <br />Jan. 17, in the Council Chambers. (Co -composting refers to <br />composting sewage sludge with municipal solid waste.) <br />The session will begin with comments from Council Chair <br />Sandra Gardebring and Council Member Dottie Rietow, who <br />both recently visited co -composting sites in Sweden and <br />Denmark.
