f <br />PART I: DEFINITIONS <br />For the purpose of these regulations, certain terms or'words <br />used herein shall be interpreted as follows: the word "shall" <br />is mandatory,'the words "should," and "may" are permissive. All <br />distances unless.otherwise specified shall be measured horizontally. <br />"ADMINISTRATOR" That person charged by the City Council with <br />the enforcement of the On -Site Sewage Treatment Code. <br />"AEROBIC TANK" Any sewage tank which utilizes the principle of <br />oxidation in the decomposition of sewage by the introduction of <br />air into. the sewage. <br />[ "ALTERNATIVE SYSTEM" An individual sewage treatment system <br />employing such methods and devices presented in Sections 8 <br />fand 9 of this Manual. <br />"BAFFLE" A device installed in a septic tank for proper operation <br />P P P P <br />o the tank, and to provide maximum retention of solids. Includes <br />l} vented tees and submerged pipes in addition to those devices that <br />are normally called baffles. <br />[ "BEDROCK" That layer of parent material which is consolidated <br />and unweathered. <br />!� "BEDROOM" Any room within a dwelling that, in the judgement -of the <br />administrator, might reasonably be used as a sleeping room, including <br />r but not limited to rooms designated as den, office, or study. <br />1 BUILDING DRAIN"That part of the lowest piping of the drainage <br />system which receives the da.schrge from soil, waste, and other <br />drainage pipes inside the walls of the building and conveys it <br />to the building sewer beginning at least one foot outside the <br />building footings. <br />"BUILDING SEWER" Thaty <br />art of the drainage s stem which extends <br />P g <br />from the end of the building drain and conveys its discharge to <br />[ an individual on-site sewage treatment system. Adequate•cleanouts <br />shall be provided as per the State Plumbing Code. <br />"CAPACITY The liquid volume of a sewage tank using inside <br />imensions below the outlet. <br />i "CESSPOOL" An underground pit into which raw household sewage <br />or other untreated liquid waste is discharged and from which .the <br />liquid seeps into the surrounding soil. <br />- -2 <br />
