HARDCOVER ORDINANCE - In 1975, the Orono City COunQil. adopted an ordinance limiting <br />the percentage of lot area that can be covered with impervious surfaces ('hardcover') <br />such as roofs, driveways, sidewalks, etc. on properties located within 1,000 feet of <br />a lake. Studies have shown that sediments, oils, and debris carried into the lake <br />from highly urbanised areas have a detrimental impact on the quality of water in the <br />lake. The intent of Orono's ordinance is to ensure that rainfall run --off will be <br />cleansed by filtering through grassed or vegetated yard areas before entering the <br />lake. <br />'.
