► <br /> � •;. . <br /> CITY OF ORONO <br /> ORDINANCE NO. 232 <br /> AN ORDINANCE PROHIBITING 'PHE USE OF LEGHOLD ANIMAL TRAPS <br /> THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF ORONO ORDAINS AS FOLLOWS: <br /> Section l. The Municipal Code of the City of Orono is amended <br /> by adding Chapter 80A as follows: <br /> CHAPTER 80A Animal Trapping <br /> 80A. 010 Purpose It is the purpose of this Chapter to preclude <br /> the potential harm that may be inflicted upon people, particularly children, <br /> and to prevent the crippling, unselective catching, and destruction of <br /> wildlife and domestic animals that may come into contact with traps. <br /> 80A. 020 Definition As used in this ordinance the following <br /> terms shall have the following meanings: <br /> Leghold trap - Any device consisting of two metal jaws which <br /> lay horizontally to form a circle, square or <br /> similar shape when the trap is set, or a trap <br /> which is similar to the above in design and <br /> which is intencled to catch and secure an animal <br /> by the leg, toes, or paw. Such a device may be <br /> known as a "steel" , "jaw (ed) leg" , "long-spring" , <br /> "coil-spring" , "flat-under- spring" , "foot" , <br /> "front-hold" , "game" , or similar named trap. <br /> � Trapping - The setting or laying, or other use of a trap with <br /> . the intent of capturing or killing an animal. <br /> 80A. 030 Leghold traps prohibited. The setting, placement, or <br /> use of any leghold animal trap within the Orono City limits is �ereby <br /> prohibited. <br /> 80A. 040 Limited Permits. In extraordinary cases, Council may <br /> grant a limited permit for the abatement of a specific animal <br /> nuisance, but only when the proposed use is determined to be in the public <br /> interest and will not cause any hazard to children, other wildlife or <br /> domestic animals. Permits shall specify time limits for trapping, location, <br /> number of traps and approved maintenance procedures of trap lines. <br /> Applications for limited permits shall be made to the Chief of Police,.and <br /> shall be accompanied by a written statement of proof of hardship and a <br /> certified property owners list of property owners within 500 feet of <br /> trapping area. Property owners shall be notified that such application <br /> is being considered by the City. The permit fee shall be in the amount <br /> prescribed by the current City fee schedule. <br />
