GUIDANCE AT A GLANCE <br />Career Education Night <br />The six high schools of the Western Suburbs have co- <br />ordinated a Career Education Night to be held on <br />March 15, 1988 at Minnetonka High School. <br />The program for the evening is diversified to accom- <br />modate many interests of both students and adults. <br />The presenters are of the highest caliber and will <br />discuss not only career opportunities, but also the <br />pat.,,s that lead co these opportunities. <br />It is our goal to have all students and adults in tran- <br />sition avail themselves of this excellent information. <br />Attention. Orono High School Seniors <br />The Orono School District and local scholarship appli- <br />cations are currently available in the high school <br />guidance office. Application period runs from March 1 <br />to March 15. 1988. Awards are available for both col- <br />lege bound and vocationally oriented students. Seniors <br />who have attended Orono are eligible to apply for con- <br />sideration. Award night is scheduled for May 17th of <br />this year. All 5enlors are strongly encouraged to <br />tppl.. It takes one minute. <br />Registration Completed <br />Registration for the 1988-89 school year has been com- <br />pleted at the high school. You will receive a copy of <br />your student's schedule near the end of the school year. <br />If you wish to make any changes or, the schedule It must <br />be done by June 16, 1988. Ninth grade students will <br />also receive a copy of their three year plan which was <br />submitted at the time they registered. <br />TEST DATES <br />SAT May 7 Rcgisttation Deadline April 1 <br />ACT April 16 Registration Deadline March 18 <br />National Honor Society Selection Process Begins <br />Orono High School will soon be starting the process of <br />selecting the new members of the National Honor Society <br />for 1987-88. No application is necessary. Membership <br />is the highest honor that Orono High Scho,1 can bestow <br />upon those students who have exhibited exemplary aca- <br />demic and per,.inal qualities. <br />The following guidelines are used by the Orono High <br />School faculty to select members of the National Honor <br />Society. <br />1. Only juniors and seniors are eligible. Students <br />who are early graduates or semester drops are of <br />eligible. <br />_. One must have a cumulative trade point average of <br />at least a B 0.00). <br />1. All students considered must consent to be rated <br />by teachers and sign a release to that effect. <br />4. (.*,ne must have been in attendance full time for a <br />minumum of two Quarters as a residency requirement <br />,.mti,,ued next column) <br />(continued) <br />5. Four factors are used to determine which students <br />from the list of eligible candidates will finally <br />become members. They are schola_rshIP, character, <br />service, and leadership. <br />6. The faculty rates students on character, service, <br />and leadership and -his is combined with the stu- <br />dent's cumulative grade point average representing <br />the fourth factor scholarship. To be further con- <br />sidered a candidate must be rated by at least five <br />faculty members. <br />7. A numerical formula is used to combine the ratings <br />and grade point average into a composite four digit <br />score. <br />8. A cut point is used. All junior or senior candi- <br />dates meeting or exceeding this cut point will be <br />inducted into the National Honor Society during <br />ceremonies in the auditorium on May 17, 1988. <br />THOMAS LOWERY To RECEIVE DIRECTOR'S AWARD FROM HTC <br />Thomas Lowery has been selected to receive the "Direc- <br />tor's Award" for the first semester of this school year. <br />As such, has has been accorded one of the highest recog- <br />nitions awarded high school students at Hennepin Technical <br />institute. This distinction is reserved for only 52 of <br />the student body. <br />Tom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Lowery of Maple <br />Plain and is enrolled in the auto mechanics program. <br />Congratulations, Tom! <br />Pat Headley <br />Office Education <br />ORONO SLIVER SOCCER <br />The Orono summer soccer program is organized to provide <br />a competitive soccer experience for boys born in the <br />years of 1969 through 1977. The sign up meeting will <br />be held Saturday, April 16, 1988 at 10:00 a.m. in the <br />Orono High School lunchroom. <br />If enough players desire we will have teams playing in <br />the Northwest District of the Minnesota Junior Soccer <br />Association. The playing season is the months of June <br />and July. Our local teams would be competing with others <br />from the western suburbs including Wayzata, Minnetonka, <br />Golden Valley, New Hope, Plymouth, Eden Prairie, Edina <br />and Brooklyn Park as well as others. Orono expects to <br />field teams in four age levels, "Boys Under 19," "Bove <br />Coder 16." "Boys Under 14," "Boys Under 12." <br />The April Ih meeting is to set guidelines and determine <br />our involvement.
