Various types of recirculating -fluid waste transport systems <br />are on the market, which use a recyclable fluid (water, mineral <br />oil, etc.) to transport toilet waste either to a holding tank and <br />incinerator unit, or to a self contained treatment unit. These <br />systems are quite complex in design and prices range from <br />$13,000-3C,000. The demonstrated applicability for these units <br />is to serve a building or business with little or no "graywater" <br />(sink, shower, laundry) use. These units would riot be practical <br />tc G-• ve the needs of Stubbs Bay. <br />A second type of recirculating toilet considered is the <br />portable unit used in boats and recreational vehicles. These <br />units have a relatively small holding tank capacity and are not <br />suited to full time residential family usage. <br />Two innovative types of toilets which are more appropriate <br />under the constraints of a holding tank system include <br />incinerator toilets and composting toilets. Incinerator toilets <br />are a self-contained toilet and waste treatment unit which uses <br />electricity or burns natural gas to reduce human waste to a clean <br />ash which needs to be removed on a regular basis. Cost range for <br />the units is about $1,500-2,000 plus connection and installation <br />costs. These units do require some maintenance, and energy costs <br />in either case are a consideration. <br />Composting toilets provide a chamber in which proper <br />environmental conditions are maintain6d for biological breakdown <br />of human waste. The resultant compost must be removed on an <br />occasional basis. Most units use some type of electrical heating <br />element. Cost of the units ranges from $800-2,000 plus <br />installation costs. One such system is now in use on Eastlake <br />Street in the study area, in conjunction with a graywater holding <br />tank, on a property too small to support any type of septic <br />system. <br />All the systems descrirc.-d above pertain only to the handling <br />of toilet wastes and must be used in conjunction with a graywater <br />treatment and disposal system, i.e. septic tank/drainfield, <br />holding tank, or other method. <br />18 <br />
