Date: August 5, 2025 Item:
Presenter: Joe Ruthenberg, Superintendent - Parks, Facilities
Section: Staff Report

Title: Hackberry Park Update

1.Purpose:
To present an update on the plans & citizen feedback for Hackberry Park.
2.Background:
At the May 27th meeting, the City Council approved funding for the design phase of improvements at
Hackberry Park. This design work builds upon the planning efforts completed in 2023 and represents the next
step in a long-term vision to enhance this valued community asset.
Hackberry Park has been a focus of city improvement efforts for over a decade. In 2016, the city entered into a
life estate agreement for the property at 140 Hackberry Hill—a residential parcel located in the center of the
park. The city took full possession of the parcel in 2023 and completed demolition of the existing structures
shortly thereafter.
The current project scope includes critical drainage improvements for both the park and the surrounding
neighborhood, long-overdue infrastructure repairs, reconfiguration of the playing fields, enhanced parking,
and the addition of ADA-accessible paths and support facilities.
Design plans are being refined through continued engagement with stakeholders and community members.
These updated plans will support the City’s efforts to pursue grant opportunities and secure funding for the
construction phase.
3.Park Commission Action Requested:
Give feedback to staff on the proposal that will be presented to City Council.
AGENDA ITEM

Exhibits
Hackberry Park Survey Results (1).pptx
Hackberry Survey Feedback Results.docx
12
