Telephone 473-7357
SCITY
CITY of ORONO
Post Office Box 66* Crystal Bay, Minnesota 55323 • Municipal Offices
;OF
ORON(^
On the North Shore of Lake Minnetonka
July 20, 1978
Mr. James Olson
Bonestroo & Associates
2335 Highway 36
Saint Paul,
Minnesota 55113
Dear JdLm:
Enclosed is a proposal by Jerry Johnson (septic system contractor)
for a drainfield repair using a bed system at 248 Cygnet Place
for the Dean Mblin residence. The site has some extensive limitations
as to where additional drainfield could go. These limitations are
in the form of steep slopes behind the house, landscaping in the front,
and an intermittent creek to the east, as well as existing tree cover
generally around the yard perimeter and a lot of only 1 acre. Present
drainfield of approximately 320 s.f. is flowing directly to the creek.
The proposed bed system will use 4*' plastic pipe in a grid pattern for
distribution and will add 450 square feet of drainfield.
Alternatives to this system would be two short trenches rather than a
bed, but the maximum area which could be added would be about 200 s.f.
Another alternative may be to cut down the trees to the southeast,
add drainfield and pump from the second tank. A third and more expensive
alternative may be a total mound system over the existing drainfield.
Each of these alternatives would be constructed within 20-30 ft. of the
creek where Orono code specifies a 75' setback. You may want to view
the site - if so, call me. The Cygnet Place area has generally poor
soils for septic systems and high water tables. At least 20% of the
systems in the nei^borhood are failing.
Please recomnend approval or disapproval of the proposed system,
are going to run into more of these so be prepared.
Sincerely,
Michael P. Gaffron
Septic System Inspector
MPG:kh
Enc.
