Suggested Text Changes to Orono City Code Chapter 62 Animals and Chapter 78 <br />Zoning Regulations <br /> <br />Proposed Definitions (Both Ch. 62 & 78): <br />Animal means any non-human living creature, including domesticated animals, dangerous animals and <br />farm animals. <br /> <br />Domestic poultry means birds or poultry kept within a coop that include female chickens or hens, doves, <br />pigeons, ducks, geese, turkeys and guinea hens. Domestic poultry does not include male chickens or <br />roosters. <br /> <br />Domesticated animals mean animals customarily considered as household pets that live in tame <br />condition, are not used for agricultural purposes, and are typically kept within the primary residence. <br /> <br />Farm animals mean livestock or animals that are kept for commercial or non-commercial agricultural <br />purposes. Farm animals include, but are not limited to, cattle, horses, mules, sheep, goats, swine, <br />ponies, honeybees, and domestic poultry. <br /> <br />Proposed Land Use Changes (Ch. 78): <br />Text to add in Accessory Uses of Residential Zone Districts, excluding RS zoning: <br />• Keeping of farm animals subject to the supplemental use standards in section 78-XXXX(1). <br />• Keeping of domestic poultry subject to the supplemental use standards in section 78-XXXX(2). <br /> <br />Keeping of Farm Animals (In Supplemental Requirements): <br />1) Farm animals, including domestic poultry, can be kept on a residential lot, subject to the following: <br />a) The property must be a minimum of two (2) acres in size. <br />b) Any building or structure associated with farm animals must meet principal building <br />setbacks of the underlying zoning district. <br />c) For the keeping of horses, there must be at least one (1) acre for the dwelling and two (2) <br />acres of open pasture for the first horse. For the keeping of more than one (1) horse, the <br />property must have one (1) additional acre of open pasture for each additional horse. <br />Calculations of minimum pasture acreage shall not include any land defined as a wetland or <br />wetland buffer under section 78-1602. <br />2) Domestic Poultry can be kept on a residential lot, subject to the following: <br />a) The property must be a minimum of one-half (1/2 or 0.5) acre in size. <br />b) Any building or structure associated with farm animals must meet principal building setbacks <br />of the underlying zoning district. <br />c) A maximum of five (5) birds can be kept on lots between one-half (1/2 or 0.5) acre and two <br />(2) acres in size. <br />117
