Orono residents were asked a series of questions about city services and taxes. City services <br />were rated and the quality of drinking water was discussed. Next, property taxes was discussed. <br />A rating of their current level and the value of services in light of property taxes were examined. <br />Finally, the willingness to increase property taxes to enhance services or offer new ones was <br />measured. <br />City Service Ratings <br />Respondents were instructed: <br />I would like to read you a list of a few city services. <br />For each one, please tell me whether you would rate <br />the quality of the service as excellent, good, only fair, <br />or poor? <br />A list of nine city services was then read: <br />Police protection? <br />Ninety-three percent rate police protection highly, while five percent are more critical: <br />EXCELLENT ...................................... <br />37% <br />0 <br />ONLY FAIR ........................................ <br />4% <br />0 <br />DON'T KNOW/REFUSED ............................ <br />3% <br />There are no statistically significant sub -group differences. <br />Fire protection? <br />Eighty-seven percent rate fire protection favorably, while six percent rate it unfavorably: <br />EXCELLENT ...................................... 32% <br />a <br />ONLY FAIR ........................................ 4% <br />0 <br />DON'T KNOW/REFUSED ............................ 8% <br />25 <br />
