Light Rail Corridor <br />Residents were asked: <br />Would you favor or oppose the City of Orono funding <br />lobbying efforts to establish a light rail corridor con- <br />necting Downtown Minneapolis with Hopkins, Minne- <br />tonka, Wayzata, and Orono? Do you feel strongly that <br />way? <br />By a 73%-20% margin, resident favor the City funding lobbying efforts to establish a light rail <br />corridor connected Downtown Minneapolis with Hopkins, Minnetonka, Wayzata and Orono: <br />STRONGLY FAVOR ............................... 22% <br />FAVOR.......................................... 51% <br />OPPOSE .......................................... 14% <br />STRONGLY OPPOSE ............................... 6% <br />DON'T KNOW/REFUSED ............................ 7% <br />Supporters are more apt to be: <br />• residents for less than ten years <br />• those connected to city sewer <br />• eighteen to forty-four year olds <br />Opponents are typically: <br />• households with seniors <br />• those with septic tanks <br />• over fifty-five year olds <br />Summary and <br />Conclusions <br />Seventeen percent of the sample works in the City of Orono. Forty-nine percent commute <br />outside the city limits. Nine percent are currently not working, and 25% are retired. Sixty-nine <br />percent rate the ease of their commute to and from work positively, while 31 % rate it negatively. <br />Only four percent of the community uses public transportation. By a 52%-38% margin, residents <br />favor the City of Orono developing expanded automobile traffic corridors for commuter traffic <br />moving within and through the community. By a 77%-16% margin, residents also favor the City <br />pursuing the construction of an expanded park -and -ride lot in the Navarre area or in northern <br />Orono, as well as establishing more frequent bus service between the lot and Downtown <br />Minneapolis. Finally, by a 73%-20% majority, respondents favor the City funding lobbying <br />efforts to establish a light rail corridor connecting Downtown Minneapolis with Hopkins, <br />Minnetonka, Wayzata, and Orono. <br />100 <br />
