HEATING AND COOKING EQUIPMENT 224-7 <br />on large buildings, hamper or fall on fire fighters who <br />may have to respond to a fire in the building. <br />Chapter 5 Heating and Cooking Equipment <br />5-1 Chimneys and Flues. <br />5-1.1* Stoves and furnaces shall be installed in accor ­ <br />dance with requirements of NFP *!1, Standard for <br />Chimneys, Fireplaces, and Vents. <br />5-1.2 Any wood construction used in the building shall <br />not hft in contact with the chimney and shall be kept a <br />minirnum of 2 in. (5.1 cm) away. Clearance to heat pro ­ <br />ducing appliances shall be as specified in NFPA 89M, <br />Heat Producing Appliance Clearances. <br />5-1.3* Chimnev* shall extend at least 3 ft (0.9 m) above <br />the highest point where they pass through the roof of the <br />building and at least 2 ft (0.6 m) higher than any portion <br />of a building within 10 ft (3.05 m). <br />5-1.4 Fireplaces shall be constructed of solid masonry or <br />reinforced concrete or be an approved freestanding <br />design. If a lining of fire brick at least 2 in. (5.1 cm) thick <br />or other appropriate lining is used, the total thickness of <br />back and sides shall be 8 in. (20.3 cm). If such lining is <br />not provided, the thickness of back and sides shall be not <br />less than 12 in. (30 cm). <br />5-1.4.1* A noncombustible heanh shall extend a mini ­ <br />mum of 20 in. (50.8 cm) from the flue or fireplace to pro ­ <br />tect flooring and rugs. <br />5-2 Equipment Burning Solid Fuel. <br />5-2.1 Wood and coal stoves shall rest on a firm base <br />with 36-in. (91.4-cm) clearance from unprotected com ­ <br />bustible walb and ceiling. <br />5-2.1.1 Noncombustible floor covering approved by the <br />authority having jurisdiction shall be used to catch falling <br />sparks under wood stoves equipped with legs on com ­ <br />bustible floors: extend thu covering at least 6 in. (15.2 <br />cm) beyond all sides of stove and 12 in. (30.5 cm) in <br />front. {For definition of "noncombustible" refer to NFPA <br />97M, Standard Glossary of Terms Relating to Chimneys, <br />Vents and Heat-Producing Appliances.) <br />5-2.2 An insulator shall cover exposed combustible <br />walb or partitions where clearances mentioned in 5-2.1 <br />cannot be obtained. The insulating material shall be in <br />accordance with Table 2-2.1 of NFPA 89M. Clearances <br />for Heat Producing AbbUances. A 1-in. (2.54-cm) air <br />space shall be provided oetween thb protective covering <br />and the wall, using noncombustibie spacen. <br />5-2.3 Locate woodboxes at least 3 ft (0.9 m) from a <br />wood-burning stove. <br />5-2.4 Deposit ashes in covered metal containers only, <br />storing outdoors until safe disposal can be made. <br />5-2.4.1 To dbpose of ashes, dump them only when <br />thoroughly wetted in a pit dug in mineral soil where all <br />vegetative hazard has been cleared away for 10 ft (3 m). <br />5-2.5 Do not use kerosene or other flammable liquids <br />for starting or accelerating fires. <br />5-3 Outdoor Barbecues. <br />5-3.1* The area used for barbecues in forest land shall <br />be cleared to mineral <nil in a circle at least 5 ft (1.5 m) <br />diameter and the barbecue stand shall be placed in the <br />center on a firm, level spot. A supply of water and a <br />shovel or rake shall be kept nearby for control of any <br />small fire that may start in nearby forest duff or litter. <br />5-3.1.1 Gasoline shall not be used for starting barbecue <br />fires. <br />5-3.1.2 Electrical charcoal igniters shall be of the ap­ <br />proved type. <br />5-4 Equipment Burning Fuel Oil. <br />5-4.1* All equipment which bums fuel oil for cooking <br />or supplying heat to a room or building shall be installed <br />in accordance with NFPA 31. Installation of Oil Burning <br />Equipment. Only appliances and equipment which have <br />been tested and listed by a nationally recognized testing <br />laboratory shall be used and their use shall be restricted <br />to their designated purposes. <br />5-4.1.1 All fuel oil shall be stored and handled in con ­ <br />formance with the provisions of NFPA 31. Installation of <br />Oil Burning Equipment. <br />5-4.1.2 Other combustible and flammable liquids shall <br />be stored and handled in conformance with the provi­ <br />sions of NFPA 30. Flammable and Combustible Liquids <br />Code. <br />5-5 Equipment Burning Gas. <br />5-5.1* All equipment that bums gas shall be installed <br />and maintaini^ in accordance with NFPA 54. National <br />Fuel Gas Code. <br />5-5.2* Liouefied petroleum gas containers and installa ­ <br />tions shall be installed and maintained in accordance <br />with NFPA 58. Storage and Handling of Liquefied Petro­ <br />leum Cases. <br />5-5.2.1 Locate liquefied petroleum gas containers and <br />first stage regulating equipment outside of buildings. All <br />containers shall be secured against falling. <br />5-S.2.2 For domestic use. containers should be set on a <br />firm foundation, aboveground. The outlet piping should <br />be protected against breakage from settling by a flexible <br />connection or special fitting. The containers are required <br />to have safety devices specified by Department of <br />Transportation regulations. <br />5-6 Open Flame-Type Equipment. <br />5-6.1* When used indoors, open flame-type equipment <br />shall be positioned firmly on a steady support table or
