1988 Annual Report <br />for the fiscal yea.* ended <br />30 September 1988 <br />In accordance with the provision of Minnesota Statute Chapter 197, the fol­ <br />lowing annual report is submitted coj.L;.-ning the activities of the Big Island <br />Veterans Camp Board of Governors. <br />Summary <br />Extensive demolition, clean-up and renovation activities resulted in the Camp <br />being re-opened for day camping by veterans in July. Planning and fund rais­ <br />ing for reconstruction of facilities and buildings is well under way and re­ <br />lations with the City of Orono have improved dramatically. <br />1988 Accomplishments <br />1. Camp Re-opening <br />The Camp was re-opened fof* day camping on July 10, 1988. The re-dedi­ <br />cation ceremony was attended by over 200 people and included a flag rais­ <br />ing by Charles Lindberg, the sole remaining Iwo Jima flag raising veteran. <br />The re-opening was the culmination of an intensive clean-up and renovation <br />activity that brought the Camp into conformance with Orono requirements <br />and removed all hazardous buildings and conditions. (See attached news <br />article) <br />2. Demolition and Clean-up <br />A total of 32 of the 43 buildings on tlie Camp property were demolished <br />and completely buried, burned or hauled away. All 32 buildings were be­ <br />yond economical repair and were considered to be hazardous by the City of <br />Orono and the Board. The remaining 11 buildings were renovated to approved <br />standards or secured completely pending renovation. In addition, over 200 <br />yards of debris were trucked across the ice to dumpsters during March. Berg <br />Hall was buried on-site and extensive clean-up of deadfalls and stumps was <br />accomplished.
