Mike Preble, Schumann Teacher, <br />Awarded Minigrant <br />The 1988-89 Minnesota Minigrant Program has awarded <br />grants to 69 Minnesota teachers who are providing <br />innovative classroom education in energy, science, <br />mathematics and technology. The total amount of money <br />awarded was $18,585. > ' <br />To qualify for a minigrant, teachers submitted <br />applications outlining projects and explaining how they <br />planned to achieve objectives of the program. <br />The Minnesota Minigrant Program olfers grants of up to <br />$250. After they complete their programs and project, <br />teachers receive a $50 honorarium and a Minigrant <br />certificate. <br />The minigrant which Mr. Preble proposed was in <br />environmental education setting up habitat centers in the <br />classroom. The minigrant is for $175 to provide the <br />materials to do this project. <br />Sponsors of the 1988-89 Minnesota Minigrant Program <br />are the Minnesota Energy Education Consortium, <br />Minnesota High Technology Council and the Minnesota <br />Department of Education. The Minnesota Environmental <br />Sciences Foundation, Inc., administers the program. A <br />committee of volunteers representing the sponsoring <br />organizations makes all funding decisions. <br />Sponsors providing financial support are Cray Research <br />Foundation, Dairyland Power Cooperative, East Central <br />Electric Association, Minnegasco, Minnesota Power, <br />Northern States Power Company and the Minnesota <br />Department of Education. <br />Congratulations to Mr. Preble! <br />Guidance at a Glance <br />I Jpenming Test Dates: <br />SAT March 11,1989 Registration Deadline Fdjruaiy 3,1989 <br />ACT April 15,1989 Registration Deadline March 17,1989 <br />In addition to the regular registration deadlines for the listed test^ <br />there are late registration deadlines. An extra fee is involved and <br />no guarantee of getting your requested test center. The practice is <br />not encouraged except in an emergenty. See your counselor or <br />consult the registration padeets for further informatioa <br />Finanrial Aid Forms <br />Seniors and their parents are reminded to file either the FP5 <br />(Family Financial StatemenO or FAF (Finarvcial Aid Form) if they <br />wish to be considered for financial aid. Aid may come a variety of <br />sources such as federal agenaes, state agencies, and the colleges or <br />schools themselves, arvd private corporations and orgianizations <br />The one constant is that tirey alt want to see one of the above <br />mentioned forms. Application packets are available in the <br />guidance office. <br />Scholarship Opportunities <br />The guidance office continues to receive a wide variety of private <br />sector, college, and public scholarship applications. He was <br />with us during the week of January 9-13 working in clay. <br />Each student was able to do a clay sculpture under the <br />guidance of Mr. Lupori and Mrs. Shoop. <br />During the week of January 23 - 27, Author Susan <br />Pearson worked with Grade 1-3 students. She is a <br />famous author of children's books. Among the books she <br />has written are: "Karin's Christmas Walk," "Idy Favorite <br />Time of Year," "The Day That Pork Chop Climbed the <br />Christmas Tree," "Pork Chop's Halloween" and "Happy <br />Birthday, Grampie". <br />Both of these residencies were funded by your donations <br />to the Orono Education Fund. <br />Marvel Bongart <br />Elementary Principal <br />if * <br />€ <br />Peter Lupori helping a student finish a project
