M, <br />*1 <br />Carried u -^ously. <br />Bill Fe Warren Nelson updated the Board on the recycling program that <br />has been s i in the school district involving staff as well as students. <br />Mr, Fenholt stated that some set-up costs have been realized but that after one <br />year the savings generated will pay for the recycling equipment. Warren Nelson <br />provided background Information on the recycling of previous years and the <br />recycling that is presently taking place or in the planning stages. <br />The Board heard a report from Doug Erickson regarding the <br />development/implementation of the Orono Homeroom Program which is presently <br />underway at the high school for ninth and tenth grade students. Mr. Erickson <br />stated that one of the key elements in the program was to emphasize being an <br />Orono student, no matter the grade level; therefore, students are assigned to a <br />homeroom with equal numbers of each grade in each room and they meet once a <br />week. Through this program students will receive information on health and <br />wellness Issues, academic assistance from faculty advisors, peer <br />counseling/tutoring, as well as the opportunity for socialization with fellow <br />students. The students are currently preparing a weekly taped program of high <br />school news called "Spartan Update" to be broadcast on Channel 20 at 5:30 p.m. <br />on Tuesdays. Mr. Erickson reviewed some of the plans that are being discussed <br />for future Implementation, one of which would increase the program to include at <br />least the Junior class next year. <br />UPON NOTION by Jim Franklin, seconded by Lucie Taylor, the Board of Education <br />approved the Special Education Director's contract for 1990-93 as negotiated by <br />the School Board Negotiating Committee. Carried unanimously. <br />Ms. Diane Higgins and Ms. Linda Wiard-Bauer, memberc of the Orono Education <br />Association's Communications Committee, were present am. provided an overview <br />of the activities that are being planned in celebration of American Education <br />Week, November 12 - 16, 1990. Ms. Higgins solicited the support of the Board, <br />and possiblly their participation. In the OEA's plan to invite community members <br />to teach a class session and share their expertise with students during the <br />month of November. The Board responded to this idea with enthusiasm, suggesting <br />the use of such a program during the entire school year. <br />UPON MOTION by Lucie Taylor, seconded by Jim Franklin, the Board of Education <br />approved the Annual Report as presented. <br />Or. Mich stated that the contents of this report are required by law although <br />Orono's report does go beyond the scope of the P.E.R. law and, as a result, the <br />report becomes a good reference for our residents. Jim Franklin requested that <br />a survey/questionnaire be developed which would provide the district with Infor <br />mation as to the numbers of residents who read/use this report. Administration <br />will review/study this Idea. <br />Dr. Mich expressed appreciation to Toni Bergland for her work in compiling the <br />Annual Report. <br />Motion carried unanimously.
