The automatic switching of a <br />signal from one cell to another, which (veurs <br />within u fraction of a second. <br />Mobile Telephone Switching Office <br />(MTSO) Also known as the MTX or <br />"Switch". The interface between the cell <br />sites ad the cor.veniional wireline tele <br />phone network. It serves as the central co <br />ordinator and controller, as well fs housing <br />the switching equipment for a cellular tele* <br />phone system. <br />Radio Common Carrier (RCC). Firms <br />licer^^ed by the Federal Communications <br />Commission (FCO to provide a variety of <br />radio services to the public, including dis <br />patch and paging services. .Many RCC's now <br />own cellular licenses. US WEST New Vector <br />is an RCC licensed bv the FCC. <br />Roaming. Tac .ibility to operate a cellular <br />mobile telephone in a mobile service area <br />other than Lhe one from which .service is <br />subscribed ■ for e.\ample, being able to use <br />your cellular phone in Minneapol- <br />though you subscribed originally i;. <br />Sectoriiation. An engineering refinement <br />of a celFs transmission antennas, which im <br />proves call quality by reducing cross <br />talk/interference. This is done by splitting <br />the coverage of the cell site into three equal <br />sectors, by means of directional antennas. <br />Wireline Telephone Network. The con <br />ventional local telephone network which <br />transmits calls over wires rather than radio <br />waves The FCC has ruled that wireline <br />companies or their uffUiates may apply for <br />cellular licenses in those areas w'here they <br />currently provide wireline service.
