Warren Nelson reported to the Board on the activities that are planned for Orono <br />Middle School Education Week including theme days, breakfasts for parents, a <br />barbeque for groups that have supported the middle school, etc. <br />Appreciation was expressed to David and Nicole for their presentation/efforts <br />and to Wonju Kim for developing the proclamation on the computer. <br />Warren Nelson provided the Board with information on the work of the Middle <br />School Study Committee, established to review the middle school program, and he <br />stated that the committee has been reviewing/studing national and state resour <br />ces on middle level education. In addition to these resources, he stated that a <br />survey had been sent out to parents with the idea in mind of utilizing the <br />results, both strengths and weaknesses, to develop a blueprint for the middle <br />school for the next five years incorporating the national and state recommen <br />dations as they fit Orono. <br />Connie Fladeland, Principal of Orono Primary School, provided the Board with <br />information on individualized learning development aid that is available from <br />the State of Minnesota for the purpose of improving primary level instruction. <br />Ms. Fladeland stated that this funding is primarily provided to increase the <br />amount of individualized attention for each student and to lower class size, but <br />if the class size is at a satisfactory level the money can be used to ensure the <br />implementation of individualized learning plans. She stated that her purpose at <br />this meeting was to request authorization from the Board to make application for <br />this aid. <br />UPON MOTION Lucie Taylor, seconded by Jim Franklin, the Board of Education <br />authorized the district to make application for K - 1 individualized learning <br />development aid. <br />Dr. Mich provided the Board with copies of the new registration guide for the <br />high school. He expressed appreciation to Dr. Greenfield and the faculty for <br />their work/efforts in developing this registration guide. He also passed out a <br />brochure to the Board on the equity lawsuit stating that this will serve as a <br />quick reference for them. <br />Dr. Mich stated that the following four people have filed for the school board <br />election: Don Anderson, Ann Cosgrove, Maryanna Massey and Peg Swanson; that <br />congratulations are in order to the girls basketball team and Doug Erickson for <br />winning the district title. <br />Dr. Mich updated the board on the progress of the annual goals set by the Board <br />for the 1989-90 school year stating that he is pleased with the progress that is <br />being made on these goals. Another progress report will be provided to the <br />Board toward the end of the fiscal year. <br />UPON MOTION by Lucie Taylor, seconded by Jim Franklin, the School Board accepted <br />the low bid of A.C.M., Inc., Long Lake, MN for asbestos removal at the middle <br />school as recommended by Rodger Schaefbauer of Institute for Environmental <br />Assessment. <br />Lucie Taylor MOVED, Jim Franklin seconded, to reject the electrical bids on new <br />constrii.'tion, under Division 1600 of the specifications, and call for new bids
