Grandma’s Advice is Best^^^ <br />^^^ather than turning to chemicals to clean or fix items around the house, remember what they used in the "good old days —and get^ <br />back to the basics! The following product and safe alternative chart was supplied by Earth Day 1990. <br />Aerosol sprays <br />Air fresheners <br />Chlorine bleach <br />Drain opener <br />Floor cleaner <br />Furniture polish <br />Laundry cleaners <br />Metal polishes <br />Safe AUemative _____________________ <br />Use lotions, gels or non-aerosol sprays. <br />Keep house plants to purify the air. Place <br />baking soda in your refrigerator and in gar <br />bage areas. Keep your house well ven <br />tilated. <br />Use rechargeable batteries and recycle <br />button batteries. <br />Use dry bleach or borax. <br />To prevent clogging, pour boiling water <br />down drams twice a week and always use <br />a drain strainer. Avoid using drains for <br />disposing of grease. Use a plumbing <br />snake or plunger to unclog drains. <br />Mop floor with a solution of 1 part vinegar <br />to 32 parts water. Use club soda to polish. <br />Use a solution of 1 tsp. lemon oil and 1 <br />pint mineral oil. Toothpaste gets rid of <br />water stains and salt helps with grease <br />spots. Crushed raw nuts provide an oily <br />polish. <br />Introduce predator insects such as lady <br />bugs and praying mantises to your garden. <br />Make ycur yard attractive to birds, amphi <br />bians. reptiles and bats to help control in <br />sects. Apply soapy water to leaves and <br />then rinse well. <br />Use non-phosphate detergents and. if <br />necessary, boost with washing soda. <br />Boil flatwear in a solution of baking soda <br />and salt water. <br />Product__________________________Safe \Uemati\^__ <br />Moth balls Spread out newspapers in closets and <br />place cedar chips around clothes. <br />Oven cleaner Wash after each use with a mixture of bak <br />ing soda and warm water. To soften burned <br />spills, leave a small dish of ammonia in the <br />oven overnight and scrub again the next <br />day. <br />Paint Use latex and water-based painte. <br />Paint remover Peel off paint with a heat gun or scrape <br />and sand. <br />Pet products Use products containing de-limonine gas <br />derived from citrus extracts. <br />Insecticidal soaps are biodegradable and <br />non-toxic. <br />Rug cleaner Sprinkle on dry cornstarch and then <br />\j!cuum. For r^ wine spills apply salt im <br />mediately. <br />Sh j polish Use polishes that do not contain tri <br />chloroethylene. methylene chloride or <br />nitrobenzene. Wear suede or canvas. <br />Silver cleaner Soak in warm water with 1 tsp. baking <br />soda. 1 tsp. salt and £ mall piece of <br />aluminum foil. <br />Toilet cleaner Use a solution of water and baking soda <br />Remove stubborn rings and lime build-up <br />with white vinegar or pumice stone. <br />Window cleaner Mix 2 tsp. vinegar with 1 qt. water and <br />apply with newspaper. <br />Freshwater Foundation <br />P.
